I got a deal on a big box of Chinese Norinco 7,62x39 (blue case that says "Lead Core Bullets") yesterday - took some to the range for a quick comparison with what I had before. The results were not bad:
What I've had so far was the Russian variety, FMJ "Hunting Cartridges" from the Tula factory and some German no-name stuff packaged for a British distributor. I also had some Finnish high-quality Lapua that doesn't work well in the Russian-measured bore though (see below).
Offhand grouping from 50 meters shrinked by a third compared to any of the above! The results seemed quite consistent with what a local gun rag got testing a Saiga last winter - their 100m groups were normally around 130mm, with the high exception in Lapua, 160mm and the low with the Norinco at 90mm! My Saiga was proofed at Izhmash at 123mm, obviously with Russian ammo.
I'll get to do some more serious prone grouping next week (after my first IPSC rifle club match next Monday, where I definitely will shoot Chinese) and will report with better measured results.
The only complain would be the somewhat noticeable muzzle blast; it's nowhere near as bad as with the German stuff, though, totally blinding with big puffs of smoke too...
