You can order them direct from Choate - see here - for $95.15 in black, or $109.20 in camo finish. Unfortunately, not many online suppliers carry them - wholesalers do, but you'll have to buy those through dealers.
I bought mine direct from the Choate company about 4 years ago. Not sure about the web addy - shouldn't be hard to find. IIRC, I paid about $150.
Actually, mine is the Ultimate Sniper stock, but it doesn't look much different from the varmint model. It's a solid, great looking stock and shoots very comfortably. Well worth the money. The only downside for some people is the weight - it's about 3 times heavier than my original Savage synthetic. It's not an issue for me, since I just target shoot with it, but I wouldn't want to hump it too far hunting in the woods.
A while back, I came across an online review of this stock - I believe on one of the "sniper" sites. The reviewer bashed just about everything about it, but of course, he expected everyone to afford a thousand-something dollar McMillan. It's a great product for 99.9% of the shooting public.
When I went searcing for the Choate UV for my Mod70 Stealth, the lowest I could find was Strider Industries. I had tried a few times to get a hold of them to order one but was never able to as I didn't want to use my work phone to do it. I called a couple of times before 5:00 EST, their closing time - I get off at 4:30, but always got an answering machine.
Finally got fed up with that and went directly to Choate to get one. Cost was an additional $16 but I can eat that. I knew for sure I would get the stock by ordering from the source. I had never tried Strider before and wasn't comfortable with what sounded like a home business.
Has the Ultimate Varmint for the same retail price as shown on the Choate site.
Brownell's discounts the price if you've sent them your FFL - C&R works as well as an 01. You'll recover more than the cost of the C&R just by buying the stock you want.
What kind of quality are Choate stocks? I've thought about getting one of their "Conventional" stocks for an SKS.
I've thought they were along the lines of Ramline, but I could be wrong. I've never had one. (I picked up an Interarms Mark X and it came in a Ramline stock. That is the cheapest looking stock I think I have ever seen. It will be replaced.)
Steve, I used to sell Choates at the gun shows. I'd sell three or four at each show. At one time I offered to install them for free if I could keep the factory stocks. Never had a problem with any of them. Both of my Chinese SKS's wear Choate Conventional stocks. I love them. And I'm hard to please!
