I'm researching replacement stock for my Rem 700 and I come across Ultimate Varmint Stock from Choate. So any pros and cons about this stock? I also considering Choate ultimate sniper stock, but the weight of it got me puzzled. Choate also got Tactical Stock which is very appealing and weight less then Varmint or Sniper counterpart. I'll be shooting riffle from bench and prone position.

Thank you.

I have the Ultimate Sniper model on my Savage 110FP .30-06, it is heavy but I only shoot it from the bench and prone. The weight works to the advantage by offsetting the recoil of the .30-06 and it shoots great for me. Glad I got it.

whats the price range your shooting for? I personnaly believe there's alot better out there(like everything) but my older brother has the ultimate varmint on a savage M10 .308 and likes it just fine he says for shootin off a bench at the range

and whats currently on the Rem 700?

I have one on a .300 Win. It is far heavier than the original wood stock and that's not a bad thing if you don't plan on humping it for miles.

Pro it has all the adjustable features for LOP and cheek spacing, has the little vertical adjustng screw on the butt , the aluminum V bedding block is rock solid and it will tighten groups. Con. WEIGHT If you want to carry the rifle look for a different stock.

Had one on a Savage 12 FV.

It's Rem 700 SPS Varmint, chambered for Rem 223, on the good day it shoots 0.3 MOA but I think it can do better with aluminum bedding block, since it has 1:12 twist barrel it is limited to 300 - 400 yards, in the future I'm thinking to either replace barrel to a faster twist like 8 or 7, or go up in the caliber to 243, 6.5 PPC or something capable on reaching farther. I know there are different stock options from B&C, HS, AI. For hunting I use different rifle from TC in 308 it has laminate stock and aluminum bedding block and weights like 9 lb, which is not bothering me on the hunting trips. The Remington is going to be for the shooting at the range.

Well, Rem 700 SPS stock is plain synthetic without any pillar or other bedding, plus the barrel is not free-floated, I think aluminum bedding block and free-floating could improve it and I hope I will see better results. Like one hole group at 100 yards

PROS.... Heavy, tough, stiff, plenty accurate, adjustable:)

CONS....fugly as all get out, barrel channel will fit a bazooka, looks cheap, has a sentence about Major John Plaster branded in it.:D

I do like the Tactical stock;)

If I go with tactical stock from Choate then I had also considered Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist A2 stock, I think for the money it is better build stock, but then what would I gain other then looks, aluminum bedding block and free-floating is offered by Choate Varmint and Sniper stock...

Nice, very nice! The lowest price I found for B&C A2 is about $208, it is not bad, Choate is sold for about the same...

I've been looking at those three Choates and the B&C medalist A2 (i WISH i had the cash for the A5 model), for my .308 SPS-V.

After talking with several current and former owners,I have put the Choate "sniper" at the bottom of the above list.
it's weight and bedding system are major perks for bench/prone shooting, and generally it's a decent design.
But If you ever plan to use it with a bipod, the sloped forend in conjunction with a poorly designed/executed rail & adapter system that tends to work loose over time, can be a MAJOR problem. the rail works loose and you've lost your nice reletively stable platform.
that's the major complaint, i've heard, others include that the "elevation screw" is
  • pretty much unusable on anything but a hard smooth surface
  • has a fairly useless (small) range of motion, that you're likely to wind up using a bunny bag anyway
and that the stipling on the stock was a bit "agressive"

anyway at this point my current prefernce list reads as follows
  1. B&C A5 (bit spendy for me right now)
  2. B&C A2
  3. Choate Tactical
  4. Ultimate Varmint
  5. Unltimate Sniper

my SPS Varmint in .308 "budget long range build" is riding in an Ultimate Varmint stock and i like it quite a bit. i wish there was an even higher cheek piece that came with it. i might try modify the smaller on to fit on the bigger to get an extra 1/2".

the weight tames a .308 down more than plenty enough to shoot it all day long. your .223 will feel like a .22lr. I only shoot mine off a bench or proned out also so the portability wasn't a factor. if you use a bi-pod, get a 9-13 inch one. the 6-9" won't give you enough elevation to shoot much above level from the ground.

it is a SOLID piece of hardware. very sturdy. the plastic is one of the most dense ones i've seen used in firearms or accessories. i removed a little material on the bottom rear of the grip to fit my fat mits in there and it took a lot of work with a rat tail file. ala:

I didn't shoot mine in the factory stock for comparison as i had read it's just a piece of plastic junk, and "they" were right. i'm getting just a shade under 1/3 MOA out of my gun at 300 yards and i believe the UV stock is a factor in that.

the barrel channel can take up to 1.25" barrels. it makes the SPS-V's varmint contour barrel look like a pencil barrel in there but i wasn't worried about looks.

here's what mine looks like:

it's inexpensive, but not cheap. it's money well spent in my book.

Thank you guys for all your comments and suggestions! From which I had my my decision to go with B&C A2 stock, I guess I'm going for the looks after all. By the way will I require special adapter for B&C A2 stock to mount Harris bipod? Anyway, thanks again, hope for one hole groups now ;-)

Nope, attaches to the swivel stud. One of my Harris bipods, is real close to hitting the stock with the springs when its folded up, but my other 2 clear just fine.

I have both the Ultimate Varminter on my Savage 110FLP 300WM,and the Tactical on a Savage 110FLCP 25/06 and 10FCP 308. I like both styles, but if you ever intend on hunting/carrying the gun around in the field,I'd say get the Tactical.
I have carried the other in the field on a couple hunts, and it becomes a real pain after a short time. For the bench or prone shooting it's great.

Just got B&C Tactical Medalist A2, the outside finish looks good but the inside of it really not what I suspected from B&C

looks like lots of glass bedding ahead...

I wish I had a Savage model 110 instead of a 111. They don't have provisions for a detachable mag.

No more than normal, i'd say. The voids you're showing look to be in areas where they're neither of structural importance, nor visible once the barreled receiver is bolted in place. the only ones that look like they'll need to having anything to do with AccraGlas are the ones just ahead of the recoil lug slot, where you should be putting a pad of bedding compound anyway.

the two in the forearm coincide with the swivel studs right?

That doesn't speak well for B&C's quality control does it?

again, it's cosmetic, and mostly hidden cosmetics at that (the one set along side the receiver area might be visible), ALL molded products have voids somewhere, to some degree, don't let anyone tell you different.
could that stock be better product with fewer bubbles in it's interior? yes. does it really matter that much functionally? No, and if they had to guarantee that every stock would be not only structrally/functionally sound, but perfect cosmetically they'd cost as much as McMillan.

Dim,
Totaly not gonna matter, but if your not satisfied call them, and they will exchange it. Mine had some what looked like glue on the finish, but it wore off after rubbing clp on it. Just think of the holes as bedding traction:D

If you think that looks bad, you should see the inside of an automatic transmission case. With all the casting flash, broke looking edges, you wonder how they work at all!! ;)

yes the two in front are from swivel studs I had to push stuff in because they were popping out, tomorrow I will conduct my test without bedding it see how it works, with the barrel and action inserted it looks great. I think I'll stay away from AccraGlas and use Devcon Plastic Steel 10110

wasn't it Rolls Royce that tried to "fix" that and polished the inside of theirs, then couldn't figure out why the tansmission didn't work no more?

Dropped a Remington Sendero 300 Win action in the Choate seeking to tame the stiff recoil. Took it out to the range with my pet loads...and accuracy had gone to hell. From groups in the 6s to 1-1.5 inches...more than double in size.

Pulled the action, put the stock on the table at the very next gun show. One guy walked by and pointed to the stock, asked me if that was on a Remington Sendero in 300 Win by any chance? Yes, it was, I said. "Wouldn't shoot worth a darn would it?", he said smiling and walked away. I just shook my head...

I took it back to the store and traded it off for a loss, since the owner wouldn't refund any money.

YMMV.
