I recently picked up a Savage 10FP in .308 (20 inch barrel) for a very good price, and proceeded to go through the slow process of breaking in the barrel. At the end of the day, after shooting from a bench using either a mechanical rest or the accompanying Harris bipod, I was sore and bruised to boot. While the rifle appears to have some awfully good accuracy potential, I really didn't want to go through another real uncomfortable shooting session. I was telling a friend that I was toying with the idea of getting rid of it, since much of the shooting I would do would be either from a bench or prone. Rather than do that, he strongly urged me to try a different stock before getting rid of the rifle. (I'm using the factory plastic stock.) He suggested the Choate Ultimate Sniper stock as something which would be a definite improvement over the factory plastic, and much more comfortable as well. This struck me as a good possibility, but had me doing some checking into other stocks. Since my goal is accuracy, along with fit and recoil reduction, with reasonable cost levels, I had another alternative, the factory laminated stock for the Savage 12BVSS. I excluded the Bell & Carlson due to reported issues with the recoil lug fit, and the McMillan due to cost. I understand that Sharpshooters Supply makes an aftermarket stock for the Savage at an attractive price, but don't know if it would be heavy enough to allow for more comfortable shooting.
I have seen none of these stocks, so I don't know how they would be in terms of fitting me. Since I'm over six foot tall, with a fairly long reach, I thought that the Choate would be a better bet due to the greater degree of adjustability, and the greater weight, but wanted to get some opinions from fellow THR members on their experiences before I'd place an order. The laminated factory stock is certainly much prettier than any of the others, but I don't believe that it's quite as heavy, and I'm not sure about how well it would fit me.
Thanks for the help!
