good loads for the .45ACP...

For the .45acp I'd use either the Speer Gold Dot 230gr JHP +P or the 200gr JHP +P. I also like the Remington golden saber bonded 230gr JHP.

I've heard the W-W Ranger SXT 230 gr JHP +P load is what most LEOs use.

The Magsafe or Glaser silver rounds would be a smart choice if you live or work in a urban area or near a lot of people.

Happy Holidays!

Ala Dan

Hi Dan! How are you? In my Springfield XD .45 4inch service model I have Winchester 230gr SXT-The most accurate I have found of the 230gr loads, and it opens excellent! I also will use the Federal 230gr Hydra-Shoks, another excellent load. The load you are using [Winchester 185 gr Silvertips is ok] But the absolute best load in 185gr, is the Remington Golden Saber. No other 185gr load touches it. If I shot 185gr loads, that would be my pick even in a 5 inch barrel. The 185gr Remington Golden Saber is the way to go for under 4 inch barrels. The 4 inch barrel length is minimum I would go with a 230gr load. Hope all is well with you!

The Best to you and yours!

Frank

It's not my 4" XD. It is a 3" gun. (My CDP)

I've got +P 200 Gr. Gold Dots in there right now.

One of these days I'm going to get a nice selection of ammo and get some real life velocities out of the 4" & 3" CDP's. I'll have to run some thru the 4" XD as well to get some comparison numbers. Should be interesting.
I shot up my 230 Gr. Golden Sabers and my 230 Gr. XTP's.
Rem Golden Saber Factory 230 HP gave Hi-813 Lo-745 Avg-788 ES-68 SD-22, but I forgot to write down which CDP! 4" or 3". I did not chrono any XTP's. I'll give a report when I get it all together and test.

Did not mean to change the subject. Just got to rambling. Carry on.:)

Hornady 230 Gr. XTP sitting on top of 8 grains of AA#5. (and yes, I know the ramificaitons of using Handloads in my HD weapon . . . . .just haven't been able to find anything with 230 grain speer gold dots for a reasonable price)

Have a good one,
Dave

230 Gr Federal Hydra Shoks out of my 4" Pro CDP.

165 Gr Federal EFMJ out of my 3" Ultra Carry.

XD45 Compact
Federal Premium Low Recoil 165 Grain Expanding

Make your own choice.

Federal hydrashoks fail to expand 50% of the time when shooting through clothes.

Remington golden sabers seperate from their jacket causing a poor wound channel and penetration.

Bonded golden sabers are a different story but they are hard to come upon since they are leo only like the winchester rangers.

Corbon DPX's preform like Gold dots because the lead and copper jacket are bonded but I havent seen them tested in gel or actual objects.

Or if you want some expensive hard to find ammo which I can only find at my local Class three dealer. Aguilla IQ different metals chemically bonded. They move a .45 acp round at 9mm speeds. I dont have any pictures but I killed a wild hog with them after cutting him open it looked like the bullet exploded inside, the intestines stomach and lungs were shredded some of the organs were unidentifiable and the worst part after two shots right behind the shoulder blade there were so many fragments the pig was uneatable.

Another no vote on the 230grn HydraShocks... personal experience with them out of a 4.25" G30 barrel was not impressive. Round *barely* mushroomed and was recovered intact.

After much searching and RE-searching, here, the tactical forums, so on so forth, I decided upon the Speer Gold Dot 230grn +P loaded by Georgia Arms.

There really needs to be more authoritative studies done on terminal performance of various rounds in short barreled firearms.
