Will shooting slugs and buckshot out of a open IC or mod choke eventually cause the choke to strip out sending it downrange? Also in a shtf situation could u still use the gun without a choke (I know it would never be able to use a choke again)? Also has this ever happend to anyone personally. FYI my shotgun has a 21" barrell that uses rem chokes, Thanks.

Answer to your original question, No. You will not be sending the choke tube down range shooting slugs or buck shot throught an I/C or Mod choke tube.

Answer to your 2nd question, Yes. You could shoot the shotgun without the choke tube in it during a SHTF situation. You'll be replacing that barrel shortly afterwards when all calms down or sooner. Not a good idea period.

I've put about 250 rd of various
buckshot and 50 slugs thru my
870.I've had no problems with
the mod choke in the 21"
barrel.

bpisler how bad is the recoil with shooting a rifled slug thru a mod choke, and would the recoil be alot less if I got a ic choke?

Theoretically there's a slight reduction in kick when going to an open choke, mastinson, but I doubt you'll notice.

The big factors in recoil are gun weight, load weight and speed, fit and form.

With modern slugs, no. Back in the days of a solid lead round ball, it did happen.

The two tightest slug groups I've even seen were fired from a Full choke.

Usually, though, open chokes work better. YMMV.

mastinson,

If you intend to shoot rifled slugs, I would suggest getting a rifled choke tube for your Remington. I set up my Remington 1100 like this every deer season and get outstanding accuracy from it. I started out using the sabotted slugs, but found out that I got nearly as good of accuracy and much better knock-down power using the Winchester brand of Foster type slugs. Just MHO.
