Alright friends on THR i need some help choosing my next pistol. I either want the SA XD(m) 4.5in bi-tone 45acp or the Ruger SR1911. I have had the chance to shoot the Ruger and i thought it was a great gun, but i have also had the chance to shoot an XD(m) in 9mm and it was a nail driver from 25yds. so my question is what would be the better buy with someone of the people on THR experience with these guns. I am a lefty and would have to put the ambi-safety on the Ruger but that is not a bother and it would also be my first 1911 style pistol. I am an LEO so carrying a large pistol does not bother me in the least so holster and what not are not an issue. I also what the best of the two as far as straight out of the box shooting goes. I dont have plans to turn this EDC into a racegun so if it need lots of work from the get go you can count me out. i have looked at budsgunshop and they ahve the SA XD(m) for $632 and my local FFL can get the Ruger for $600 before tax. the XD(m) does come with more goodies but i am still no sure if thats worth it.

So please people of THR help make the right decision on what would be the better buy.

They're different.

I'm generally a 1911 guy -- I like the platform, its feel, and its features.

I've shot exactly one XD, and that was the 5.25" that was on display during Media Day at SHOT. I prefer the feel of a 1911 (especially the trigger), but there was nothing objectionable about the XD and I was quite impressed with how quickly it got back on target.

I don't think either is a bad choice, and personal preference will certainly play a big factor here.

I think you should get the Xdm. I think you would quickly grow impatient waiting on a Ruger to become available.

The two pistols are very different. About the only things in common are the caliber and the general price point.

A couple of your statements piqued my interest

The 1911 is not an assembler's pistol. Chances are good you will need to have this done by a professional, if you want it done correctly.

Since most law enforcement officers carry a Glock these days, the fact that both the XDm and the Ruger are duty size pistols is not the issue. The fact that the Ruger is all steel and is significantly heavier than a Glock or the XDm is more of an issue.

That's a tough choice. I would lean toward the XDm for a daily carry piece, but I love 1911s too.

I would be cautious about the "extra goodies" the XD offers though. I suspect you'll be needing to purchase real hefty carry gear. I wouldn't rely on the free plastic stuff, not for LE duty wear.

I've always been a little cautious of the ambi-safety for a 1911. I suppose because I'm usually careful to ensure that the guns profile against my body is clean, but I'm also concerned about it getting flicked off by some crazy body movement. I think the right holster would alleviate all those issues.

Personally, I carry either in a shoulder holster that blocks the hammer or I carry in a Versa Max 2.

The options for gear for a 1911 make it a really good choice.

When it comes right down to it though, for me it would be all about reliability.

I think if you are carrying it for duty, the XDM is the clear choice.

Its roughly the same size and weight but the XDm9 holds 19+1 rounds (!) in a standard magazine vs 8+1 for the SR1911.

Say what you will about the whole 9mm vs .45ACP debate, but I find it hard to argue with that kind of firepower.

On the whole, I would say both guns will be quite similar in terms of accuracy. I have heard good things about the XDm and I have shot an SR1911 a fair bit and I can say from Experience that the SR is quite accurate (2-3in at 20+yds off hand).

The SR is a nice range gun, nightstand gun, competition (for casual falling plates. He-Man 3-gun etc) and just plain nice to have.

But, the XDm is what I would take to a gunfight if I had to choose between those two guns. (note, if I had to take any gun to a gunfight, a pistol would not be my first choice, but that it getting away from the original topic)

That's my 2 cents.

Cheers,

I would get the SA XDm. As previously stated, the safety has to be fitted to the gun and that can be difficult to do.

If he's going to get an XDm, he said he's going to get a .45 ACP with a 13+1 capacity.

I've had the xd in several calibres for awhile, I'm also an 1911 addict.
I"ve been on the hunt for a reasonably priced new ruger 1911, and have yet to find one locally.
I have shot one, and it is a keeper.

The xds are awesome platforms, each has its place, why settle for one, when two is a party. Hope you enjoy the new shooter, and it serves you well.

apples and oranges

You are talking about two intireally different animals here. The Ruger is a military style weapon. The XD is police weapon.I have never been a big fan of Rugers, there dependable, and made well but I never liked them as much back in the day as a Colt or S&W.Also do you need a thumb safety. The XD has the grip safety only which I need in police work.Pull it out and its ready to go.Don't be lurred by all the stuff however in the XD case the mag holders are crap and won't fit on a 2" duty belt. The holster is also useless I had to go out and by a blackhawk. While I always had on fondness for a 1911 all I can say is it's not 1911 it's 2012.Buy the XD.

Neither one, XDm not on my short or long list, Ruger on hold until I actually see one. If you are looking for a service pistol then I would try a G21, M&P45, or for a CCW then a Commander size 1911 like a S&W or SIG would be my choice. My advice try as many candidates as possible, then make your choice.

The XD was designed for the Croatian military and is still being used as their issue pistol as the HS2000.

Agreed, those things that came with it sit in the box while my XD sits in a Galco HALO holster and the mags in either Safariland CD mag clips or a Blackhawk dual mag holster depending on dress.
