Hello all,

I think it's about time my nephew gets the coolest gift ever from his favorite uncle (me). He's still pretty young, so I think BB gun might be the way to go. Save a .22 for a little ways down the road.

Can anyone recommend a BB gun? Doesn't have to be the top of the line, but easy to operate would be good. Accuracy always a plus, but I know we are talking BB guns here.

Links to where a fella could buy one would be appreciated also.

Check the local walmart, and don't buy anything under $70 or you'll be replacing it in a week. The price difference VS getting it online and having it shipped is negligible.

Or you could spend a bit more and order something online such as one of those DROZD things (I think that's how it's spelled... Full auto bb gun!)

ha, he probably doesn't need the full auto! His mom is already going to not be happy about this.

I'll check out walmart. I'm not familiar with BB calibers, what's the easiest one to find? I don't want get him the wrong kind and have to make them search to get him ammo when he runs out.

It will tell you on the box what caliber it takes (the clear ones all take the plastic 6mm bbs - he might be better off with one of those as they don't look realistic. All airsoft guns take 6mm bbs.)

If it's marketed as a BB gun, it takes 4.5mm bbs, if it is a pellet gun it likely takes .177 pellets (and will also fire bbs unless it says pellets only) but they also make pellet guns in .22 and .25 caliber, and I've actually seen an old OLD pellet gun that takes .20 caliber pellets.

Everything I've seen at walmart has been either airsoft or .177/BB

That was both my boy and girl's Christmas "first very-own gun" when they were six. They were thrilled, enthusiastically absorbed the four rules, and learned to use the sights while popping targets taped to a cardboard box and then knocking 12oz cans off a pine plank at about 25 feet in short order.

I'll second the Benjamin. Been thinking about one myself. Nice feature to be able to vary the velocity by pumping to different levels. And having to pump for each shot will help with making every shot count.
 
I remember a while back I got a Daisy pellet/BB gun kit, which came with a 4x scope for about $40 total. It was pretty easy to use and I liked the accuracy - across my yard (I've got a large yard for a suburbanite) I could hit soda cans repeatedly. It survived for probably 7 or 8 years before it was stolen in a break in.
 
I was just looking at the link from the top of the page. Check out the lever action air rifles. they're more spendy but cool as heck. I now want one and have never considered an air rifle before today, thanks alot:) I'm not sure of the co2 operation though. I think i would run out of gas in 1 day.
 
If his mom isn't going to be happy about a BB gun, I won't suggest a .22 cal. I was 7yrs old when I got my first .22. I guess things have changed since I was a kid.

Good for you getting him started anyway.
 
How old is he? My nephew's gonna be eight and I'm getting him a .22 this year. He already has a Cricket but he's out growing it, his Mom's down with it though. For that link you wanted, try these folks, I've ordered several times from them, and have always had a good experience.

I'm a collector of antique Daisy BB guns, so I'm a little biased. If you're looking for a true BB gun (not pellet) My recommendation would be Daisy's re-release of their classic Model 25. They are also currently selling the Red Ryder, but I would defiantly recommend the Model 25 as my first choice.

Well I still have my old Daisy lever action BB gun, with real wood stock! Its so small though lol. But it shoots just fine, even after 15 or so years :)

For new models, I can't really give much advice.. My little bro has one but I couldn't tell you what model or such.
