Christmas Shopping - Toys R Us and Guns

Do they still make the M-16s that make the noise when you pulled the trigger. I think I wore mine out as a kid.:)

Good memories. I remember as a kid (early 90s) that Toys R Us had an entire isle for toy guns. My personal favorate was a 1911 I had that was battery operated. It was a 1:1 copy and it had a slide you could work. Not only that it had the sounds to go with it. Too bad society is breeding a bunch of sissys nowadays.

4 rules

I don't currently have kids. But from those of you who do, how would you balance letting kids have fun with realistic toys like cap guns vs. reinforcing the 4 rules, safe direction in particular. Do you go with making sure they know the difference between real and toy, and let them play as they wish? Or do you enforce some rules, even with toys, to reinforce safe handling in general? To the point, would you let kids have "gun fights" or jump on them with a "teaching moment" if they point them at each other?

--yes this is my first post, or about so at least, but I've been lurking here daily for several months now

thanks

I haven't seen a cap gun like the ones I grew up w/ in a long time :( I don't know if it's a PC thing or an actual sales numbers decision but it still upsetting.

They are still toys. I played with toy guns when I was kid. And when my dad handed me a real rifle for the first time I got a very stern voice that said something to the effect of, "THIS IS NOT A TOY. DON'T POINT THIS AT ANYONE. EVER. YOU UNDERSTAND?" Then I went back to playing with my toy guns.

Fortunately my dad never raised his voice except for a few reasons, so when he did, I listened.

This all has inspired me. Next time I go to Sportsmans, instead of buying those binoculars out front for Toys For Tots, I am gonna go inside first and buy them a cap gun. :D

Thanks for the great ideas. I just ebayed my kid a nice 'ol pair of six shooters. Very cool.

Shame about the big outlets though. I fired off a respectful but pointed email to their corporate office.

I always liked the little detective snubnose "special" look-a-likes. The ones I had as a kid were all aluminum with black plastic grips and the metal painted black. They used the plastic percussion caps that came in premade reloads of six on a plastic ring. The versions of those I've seen recently are black plastic with white grips and a gray plastic cylinder. The barrel is fitted with that annoying orange plug. The problem with these would seem to be that they wouldn't last as long as the old aluminum cast one I had as a kid.

I also recall having a Nazi Luger cap gun (Imagine giving a kid a NAZI gun?????) when i was around 8 or 10.

Gun toys for boys - Yeah!

In my childhood as every Soviet boy I had a plnty of war toys, but my favorites were metal-made Makarov, one could assemble and disassemble and a real-looking AK with working fire selector - it was then I learned AK's have Auto and single rates of fire. Some kids in our school had East Germany made PK's with belt-feeding which I envied a lot.
Anyway, today kids have Chinese-made BB 6mm air-guns, imitating Berettas, M-16 and Car-15s. I have nothing against that, except that some parents explain their kids that pointing THESE guns and shooting them at humans or animals is hazardous. Since we do not have firearms not only for grown-ups, but for everybody at all in our country, it's OK - kids may play amongst themselves, as we did, imitating Soviets and Afghans skirmishing in mountains:neener: Nice time it was!!

Do they still make the M-16s that make the noise when you pulled the trigger. I think I wore mine out as a kid.

I've seen them around here, but now they have a bolt to pull back that activates it.

I've also seen a small M60 (complete with ammo belt), and a western-style double barrel shotgun.

I think I still have a few of mine. I had a Mauser, an M3A1, and a KG-9.

I went to Toys R Us last year trying to find something for my nephew. It was a blue "laser blaster type gun with a big clear cone at the end that had rotating flashing LEDs in it.

So I look, and I look some more. I go up to a salesgirl there and give a fairly accurate description of this thing, mentioning "blue plastic" and "spinning flashing lights."

She says....do I even need to SAY it?

"I'm sorry, we don't carry any REALISTIC guns, only Nerf Shooters!"

Stupid people sometimes make me laugh, but sometimes they make me want to :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Or....do they make REAL "Lazer Blasters," and they've just been legislated away from us "civvies" before they even hit the market?:scrutiny: :neener:

Oh yeah....at the Dollar General maybe year before last they had a "police action" set with blue plastic "Detective Specials" and an MP5 where you pull the (I assume) bolt to "chamber a round" and pull the trigger to get shooting sounds until the bolt runs back to the front! :D
