Hey all,

I am wondering how necessary a chrome-lined barrel is if you plan on not using corrosive ammo and cleaning your rifle immediately when returning from the range. I bought a Yugo AK variant, because I have heard they are the best, but it doesn't have a chrome lined barrel. Should I be worried? Thanks for your help.

Chrome is much harder than the steel and is much easier to clean plus it protects the bore from corrosive primers it aids in easy extraction when the chamber gets dirt or debris in it. Very common to see com block weapons with chrome bores even M16's have this they are more reliable with the chrome chamber.

Not having a chrome bore in you AK isn't much of an issue (especially because you won't be shooting FA) but if you shoot it till it's dirty and hot you may get a stuck case more easily.

As long as you're using noncorrosive ammo (i.e., new production, not milsurp 7.62x39), then corrosion shouldn't be an issue. The main issue is barrel life if you shoot a lot when the barrel is HOT (i.e., you will see shorter life with an unchromed barrel on a Title 2 full auto, or if you do a lot of mag dumps back to back) but I doubt that will be an issue.

Where did you here Yugo AKs were the best????!!!!

They can be had for the best (read: lowest) price BUT best in quality, I am afraid you have been misinformed. That said, there's nothing wrong with them and pretty much any AK variant will get the job done well enough. The design is legendary for reason.

Ref hard chrome plating of gun barrels, I am a partner in a company that specialises in electro polishing and hard chrome plating gun barrels, we presently chrome barrels for the M2 Browning machine gun (military) if anyone has any questions please contact Norman Evans at [email protected]
