I recently got an old box of these bullets along with some other time machine type of stuff, but none of my manuals list load data for 150-grain bullets. The old green Sierra box has a copyright date of 1970, and back then, they called these "hollow cavity" bullets ;)

If you have a Sierra manual from the olden days and feel like looking up some data using Winchester 571 powder (aka Hodgdon HS-7), I'd be really grateful.

I also have 125-gr and 110-gr Sierra .357 bullets from the same era, so if you have time to post Winchester 571 data for them, that would be really swell.

If this powder is not listed in your manual, then Hodgdon H-110 data would do.

Here is the 150gr .357 mag data from my Sierra 2nd Edition manual but no W571 or HS-7. If you can get the other powder listed you'd be good to go. You can use more current for HS-7 from the One Book for .357 mag. shown below.

It's too bad Sierra stopped making those bullets in 140gr, 150gr and 170gr. They did add a 158gr JHC bullet but it's just not as good as the weights they discontinued. I have a partial box of all 3 weights and wish I had more.

BTW, they didn't just call them JHC, they are different than their JHP bullets. Their JHP bullets are full jacket hollow points and their JHC are half jacketed hollow points. If you check the Sierra site right now they have .357" bullets in JHP, JSP, JHC and FMJ in their current catalog.

Just because the bullets are from 1970 doesn't mean you need data from the 70's. Older powder yes but not bullets...

I checked my old Speer manuals #5 and #6 and no data. I checked Speer #8 (1970) and they show a 146gr JHP bullet but no Winchester powders and only HS-6, not HS-7. (I don't think HS-7 was around yet)

Speer #10 (1979)
Speer 146gr JHP bullet
HS-7 - 11.5gr to 12.5gr
H110 - 16.5gr to 18.5gr

Lyman #46 (1982) and Lyman #47 (1992) both shot that exact Sierra 150gr JHC bullet but no W571/HS-7. They only Unique, 2400, IMR4227 and 296 in Lyman #46 and Unique, 2400, IMR4227 and AA#9 in Lyman #47.
Lyman #46
Sierra 150gr JHC bullet
296 - 17.4gr Do Not Reduce

The 1997 Hodgdon Basic Manual
Speer 146gr JHP bullet
HS-7 - 10.5gr Max Charge

I looked for the 150gr listings and came up with a Speer 146gr bullet and the Sierra 150gr bullet. I didn't realize you also had a 110gr and 125gr bullet until I read your post again but I had already put the books back downstairs by then. I'll try to remember to check for those bullets tomorrow.

Mistakes can and will happen when transposing numbers. Always check the numbers you find on a forum. If you blow up blame no one but yourself!

ArchAngelCD, I would like to send you this partial box of 150-gr bullets as a small "thank you" for your helpful contributions to this great forum. I wish there were more of these 150s to send you, but it is only a partial box that came with the package of old stuff I recently bought. It seems these bullets would be more meaningful to you than they would be to me as just random odds and ends of a large assortment.

If you PM your mailing address to me, I'll drop them off at the post office on Monday.

Thanks to everyone else who replied here as well!

OK IMtheNRA, I went over all the older books I have for .357 Magnum 110gr and 125gr JHP bullet load data for W571/HS-7 and H110. I have more than I thought, certainly more than was available for the 150gr bullets.

Speer #9
125gr JHP bullet
H110 - 19.5gr to 21.5gr

Speer #10
110gr JHP bullet
HS-7 - 13.2gr to 14.2gr
H110 - 21.0gr to 23.0gr

125gr JHP bullet
HS-7 - 12.8gr to 13.8gr
H110 - 19.6gr to 21.6gr

Speer #12
110gr JHP bullet
HS-7 - 12.5gr to 14.4gr

125gr JHP bullet
HS-7 - 11.8gr to 13.3gr
H110 - 18.0gr to 20.0gr

Hodgdon 1997 Basic Manual
110gr JSP bullet
HS-7 - 13.0gr Max Charge

125gr JHP bullet
HS-7 - 12.5gr Max Charge
H110 - 19.0gr Max Charge

I hope this helps. I usually don't post load charge weights because there is too much of a chance of inverting a number or two but when it comes to older data not easily attained I make an exception. Just remember, if the numbers don't look right don't use them because everyone can make a mistake when posting no matter how careful you are.

As for the 150gr JHC bullets, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Yes, I would love to have those bullets. PM sent...

Propellant Profiles, Fifth Edition, has a reprint of an article about Win 571. The original article was published in Handloader Magazine in 1988. The article states that Win 571 was introduced in October 1973. What I find interesting is that, 15 years after introduction, the entire article and load data was about the shotshell application of the powder. The only mention of handgun application is that Winchester doesn't (didn't) publish any pistol loading data for it, though Hodgdon does (did) for HS-7.

Good luck!

^^^ I have the Winchester load book from 1973 and the only data is for shotshells. The rest of the cartridge data is skimpy, at best. I kept it because I am still shooting the last 2-3 lbs of of 16 lbs of 630... Dealer got of the business ~ 1984 & sold a lot of stuff at fill-dirt prices.

IMtheNRA,
I got the bullets in the mail today. There is almost a half box of bullets in there! Thank you very much Sir, I really appreciate you sending them to me!

Is there something I can send you to say thanks? Is there something you can't find right now I might have? Please let me know!

I will put those bullets to very good use on some small game out of my Marlin .357 Magnum Carbine...
