A couple buddies and I are thinking of starting a civil defense/ survivalist group for in case the SHTF. Are there any laws that you know of that would prohibit this.

Don't know any law against it , but do know a lot of LE departments do frown
apon the idea of armed groups that they may not have full control over.
Civilian freedom groups are not ok with a alot of this countries upper classes and leaders, we tend to frighten them. They just don't understand us :neener: Control seems to be their format of freedom. Don't mean to
step on toes, just the way I, and a lot of my friends here in our little bit of space feel. First check into your own state laws, and go from there. ;)
Most all states have civil defence guidelines :what:

You need to check you state laws very carefully for prohibitions on things like militia, paramilitary groups, disturbing the peace, mobs, riots, and every carry (open & concealed) situation possible, as well as determining if you are going to violate any insurrection act that the feds or state/locals have published.

Just talking about what you have in mind probably violates at least one anti-conspiracy law somewhere!

Think about separating "survivalist" from "civil defense" and then change "survivalist" to "primitive camping in alternative locales" to avoid all the paranoia THEY will throw at your original concept.

Most of us are betting that the S will HTF, and that it is only a question of when and where. If you prepare well, you will be far away from TF when the S does H. If you prepare quietly enough, THEY will not notice that you are not amongst the "evacuees."

stay safe.

Civil defense/survivalist group? Something already isn't right.

Civil defense is usually associated with the aid of the general population whereas survivalist groups tend to be isolationists, not interested in the general population, just themselves.

Yes, these are generalized stereotypes, but when you go out into the world with some name for your group, what you call yourself is going to influence how people deal with you.

If you are looking to contribute to the defense of your community research police and sherrif's reserves, and any state organizations your state may have.

If you are looking to get together with a few buddies keep it quiet, do not advertise, regardless how innocent your intentions.

Obviously if your intentions are not so innocent you should not be discussing them here.

Just a bunch of us guys going out to have some fun for the weekend. We shoot and camp and practice hunting. Nothing to see here. Move right along, now. :neener: :D

nfl1990,

You might want to define what you want this group to be able to do.

Do you want to set up the disaster preparedness version of a small volunteer fire department? Do you want to set up an armed militia? Do you want to set up a volunteer rescue group? I gurantee that if you want to set up an armed militia this is not the place to discuss it.

OTOH, if you and your buddies want to join the volunteer rescue squad and get the training and experience to be truely useful it's as easy as identifying the one nearest to you and asking to join or how to set one up in your community. If the members of the squad want to get additional training on firearms and law enforcement they could also join the local sheriff's reserve. If they wanted more advanced firearms training they could attend anything from Front Sight to Blackwater then.

At least 28 states have laws prohibiting paramilitary training. Most of these laws are based on model legislation written and pushed by the Southern Poverty Law Center when the survivalist movement was big and growing during the last years of the Carter administration. Some of them are so poorly wirrten that a three person hunting party could be construed to be in violation.

I have never heard of those laws being used until I read of some people charged under them (Virginia or Maryland IIRC) after the Patriot Act was enacted into law.

It's the kind of thing that scares people. Be prepared to be called racist or worse if your group ever gets any press coverage.

Dont worry about it. just dont tell anyonw who shouldnt know.

If the warden gets suspicious about what you and 5 other guys are doing in the woods in January, all armed with AR-15's, then just tell him that your practice shooting in field conditions. its the truth, and its legit because alot of varmint and predator hunters practice shooting siloets in the field durring the off-season.

No harm, no foul. ;)

Thank you for all the advice.
I am NOT talking about starting a violent/ rasist miltia, just a small group of close family and friends, perpared for when TSHTF, the only reason we would be armed would be for self- defense, and we would of course obey firearms laws. the two plans that I have in mind are either setting up at members house w/a well, a means to get the water out of the well, and enough land for farming. Or we would try to load up and head someplace remote. (the latter would be the only except we would have to travel a few hundred mile for true remotness, and most of the people who might be members (self included) live in a somewhat rural area).
