Hello,

My mom; who isn't much of a gun person, would like to buy a civil war rifle/musket (working or not) to hang on a wall for decoration. The only problem is that she wants to get a period piece. I told her that I would expect it to be rather expensive, but I really don't know much about rifles or muskets from that period.

What would be an approximate price for a period firearm?

Where can I get a good reproduction?

What should I even looking for?

If anyone can point me in the correct direction that would help me out a lot.

ETA:
Well after some searching, I'm looking for an Enfield 1853 or a Springfield 1861.

A little pricey, but for someone fitting out an upscale renovation of a period home or what have you, not such a big cost.

I think it's just a crying shame that there's no-one around who'd take it out and shoot it once in a while... or is there? ;)

[By the way, a lot of the metal work is left "bright" meaning that it's shiny steel with no browning or bluing finish. You'll need to take some care with cleaning it and waxing it to protect the finish between range sessions so it doesn't rust up.]

Does it have to be PRETTY?
A friend of mine has a Springfield rifle musket that is very worn and rusted, the barrel is even bent. But the lock works and it is a real deal Civil War piece to fill out his collection of US military rifles from muzzleloader to automatic. She could probably find a relic like that pretty reasonably, the serious collectors want better condition.

I wouldn't mind taking a replica out to shoot personally. I've fired modern black powder rifles before and it was a hoot.

However I think my mom would like the "real deal", and something with a little (or lot) of history behind it would be good.

By the way thank you for the link to Cabela's, it didn't even occur to me to check there.
