This weekend a friend and I attended this program shoot at Douglas Ridge Rifle club in Oregon. This was a first for me. Day one I couldn't shoot very well, all the disciplines were new to me. On day two I was able to put together a score of 315/400. I was very happy with this being an old man with bad knees, and recent (April) back surgery. My strong eye is off hand........... I would recommend this program for anyone who likes to shoot and learn about match style shooting. Great weekend! This program is intended to improve shooting skills for civilians and many Top Level shooters are involved in the instruction. So many great other program representatives assisted in the class. OSSA, US military and of course CMP to name a few. I forgot, they provided M16 and M4 rifles and ammunition for the two days. Iron sights.

I stumbled on the CMP about 7 years ago when a vendor caught me fondling a M1 Garand at his table. He talked me into signing up for a class taught by him and sanctioned by the CMP that taught positions, scoring, and working the “pits” as well as how to operate a Garand. That summer I shot at Camp Perry in the Garand and Springfield matches, and have been back every year since.
I have learned much about marksmanship because of these experiences, and have fallen in with a group of shooters who have become fast friends.
I’m taking the big step this summer and am attending the Small Arms Firing School taught by the US Army Marksmanship Unit at Perry prior to the matches and will begin the quest form”leg” points.
I highly recommend anyone who wants to improve his or her shooting skill to check out what the CMP has to offer.

You are so right, this country needs more of this and less of everything else, except God. I can absolutely say I'll be a part of the program in the future. In just two days met 4 people I could become friends with easily. Looking forward to the next competition.

Our club sponsors a CMP shoot once a month. It is a lot of fun and there are people shooting many different eras of military rifles. Definitely worth participating in.
