this may not be the right place to ask (im new and cant figure out how to make my own post or thread) but about cleaning .22s i get that i dont have to clean the barrel thats good to know, but how can i clean the bolt its a savage mk2-f do i soke the bolt in something or can i take it apart or just scrub it down with a tooth brush and some cleaner. and is there any kind of protectent that i can putt on my gun because its blued but it seems to rust up the day after i touch the steel which requires me to oil it all after each use. i like to keep it clean and rust free but it is a major pain in the butt and it wastes alot of gun oil. is there anything i can put on it that will stay on longer and what is a better coating for guns stainless steel, or blue or is ss just as bad.

HELP please

Cleaning the bore should be done atleast when accuracy drops and before storage. Many bolts disassemble into principle parts which you can scrub down and clean and you can break most down all the way although a manufacture may not recomend it. An aerosol type lube like remoil may do the trick if you chose not to disassemble it. As for protecting the finish, I use hoppes gun oil or CLP. The oil from your hands will rust firearms faster than anything so keep a light film of oil on the exterior. Remember gun cleaning supplies are cheap, firearms are not.

Also SS is considered a better all weather finish that bluing, although the hardchrome process i believe is the most durable.

Nate-

There's a black clip that holds the extractors and firing pin onto the bolt on the Savage MKII.

1: GENTLY pry that clip out until it will slide off the extractor on one side.

2: Remove the extractor on that side.

3: Put the clip back in place.

4: Repeat steps 1 and 2 on the other side.

5: Slip the clip off the bolt.

6: Remove firing pin.

7: Clean with the degreaser of your choice. I prefer non-toxic citrus degreasers. Do not lubricate.

8: Gently squeeze the clip to tighten its diameter. The clip acts as the extractor spring. Smaller spring equals more extractor tension. I've found that my MKII has extraction problems in cold weather using waxed match ammo, as the wax gums up the chamber making the spent casings stick in the chamber.

9: Put firing pin back in and slip clip back over bolt to retain firing pin. Make sure clip is oriented the way it was when you took it off.

10: Slide pointed ends of extractors back in their slots. They will displace the clip, then lock themselves into their detents. Make certain you put the sharp toothed extractor on the port (outer) side of the bolt.

That ought to do it.

thanks guys that will help tremendously especially the step by step walk through....just what i was looking for

How much oil are you using? Wiping a weapon down does not require several ounces. A 4 ounce bottle should last a decade or three if used just for that purpose
