I saw an CMMG AR rifle in the local GS today. I believe it had a 16" barrel and was light weight. It had the triangle front sight and a flip up rear sight with a picatinny rail. It was priced at $900.00 + tax. Is it worth it?

How are these compared to the Bushmaster police carbine that Academy sells for $1000.00?

I did a search but couldn't find what I was looking for. Also I couldn't tell if the barrel was chrome lined. Any help?

Yes CMMG's are very good rifles for the money. All barrels are 1:7 twist and chrome lined, IIRC. I would definitely say they are better than Bushmaster. Oh and if you buy a BCM or LMT bolt and carrier group your pretty much set for a defensive AR. But if you just want it for plinking/hunting then the standard BCG is fine.

Worth it? To me it was. I have that exact firearm, although mine has a 1/9 twist and I would imagine that one has a 1/7. The carrier is staked correctly, and the upper is usually solid on cmmg. It should have a lifetime warranty. I have heard a few things about their barrels but then again lifetime warranty. As of now I have 2000+ rounds though it with no malfunctions of any kind. As far as the comparisons with the Bushy..I'm biased and would take CMMG. I've shot more than one Bushmaster and I think the CMMG is a better deal. However for 300 more your on a another tier of rifles.

They make a good AR. I've got an upper of theirs with over 2000 rounds of 5.56 and .22lr through it now with 0 failures.

CMMG is good quality, IMHO so is Bushmaster. I would say they are fairly comparable, but I definitely wouldn't pay more for a Bushmaster.

Most CMMG barrels are chrome lined, but a few are instead nitrided - a process that is not mil-spec but is probably better. Mostly found on their low-end models, sold as Officer's Carbine or sold through CDNN. Like I said, not a drawback, just not mil-spec.

Personally though I would look at Smith & Wesson and Charles Daly AR options before you buy either of those. Same price range and excellent quality on both.

I put the CMMG butt with adjustable cheekpiece on one of mine. Kind of a pain to switch it for my southpaw ways but that thing gives me the best cheek I've had on an AR. Better than my other carbine with Vltor butt, and that one's nice too.

So anybody that can come up with that rear end system has got to know how to make good rifles the way I look at it.

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad I can finally get back on THR. It was dead for awhile.

What I liked about this gun and the bushy was the light weight. Most ARs I pick up seem to be at least 8 pounds or more. That kills it for me. What I want most is a lightweight 20" barrel with the carry handle. Some day I will find one.

I am going to go back and look at it again. Maybe this time I can talk to the store owner. He was busy listening to some great hunter while he installed his scope mount. You couldn't get a word in with that guy blabbing about his conquest.
