I am seriously considering getting a Garand and www.odcmp.com seems to be the place to go. I have read some posts that indictate that they can ship FedEx directly to my house, without having an FFL or a C&R. Is this right? I read they have some government exception or something?

If this is so and I don't have to deal with a transfer, I might start the CMP order process really soon.

Thanks for any and all info you can provide.

This is true. The CMP ships, via FedEx, right to your front door. CMP is one of the great deals going, especially so now that they've changed the eligibility requirements to make it more accessible.

You won't regret it.

H&R M1 (on order)

The CMP uses FedEx Priority Overnight shipping (that's the $25 fee added to the price of the Garand you buy). An adult signature is required at delivery, so plan to be home on the day of delivery. The E-Store will have shipping information, including a FedEx tracking number, you can use to go to the FedEx website to check the status of your shipment.

If you are not home when FedEx arrives with your M1, they put a slip on your door that tells you they will try again the following day and they will usually only try 3 times to deliver before sending the package back. You can also go the the FedEx shipping store (a street address will be provided on the slip) and you can pick it up there.

Ha Ha Ha! Notice those BIG stickers on the box that say, "Shipper: Do NOT Leave without signature"? Didn't even slow my FedEx guy down. He left both my 03A3 and my Garand on my doorstep. Nobody home.

Hard to decide if I was pissed he did that, or glad to have the rifles without the hassle.

Scott

Yeah.

FedEx guy didn't leave my M1 or 1903 on the door, but when I sent my Sig P232 back fro warranty work, the FedEx guy did leave it sitting on my porch, complete with all of the warnings...within 50' of the junkies and winos who walk up and down my street (crappy neighborhood). :scrutiny:

Anyway, back on topic: yeah, you should start the CMP process. It is a great deal.

That should have been reported to the manager of the local FedEx depot!! The driver that did that would more than likely be on the street looking for a new job once you notified the manager that it was a weapon that was delivered! The FedEx rules (and whatever Federal regulations) concerning the shipping of guns are pretty specific about signature delivery.

I would also think that both the CMP and BATF would not look kindly on FedEx if they found out that a weapon was simply left at your door without signatures.

My Dad purchased a Garand from the CMP a few years ago. When the Fedex guy delivered, my Mom signed for it and he said "That's quite a package, what's in there?"

She replied "Well now...that's none of your business!".

My Mom doesn't shoot, but she definitely understands "shall not be infringed".

:D

The CMP is the way to go. If you ever get near Cleveland or Toledo, you can drive a few hours over to the CMP store at Camp Perry and pick out your own if you have the paperwork with you.

To your original question: The CMP does their own background check and they do indeed ship it right to your door. You do supply everything to them that you would to an FFL, plus some other requirements that are no big deal if you have access to a shooting club. I'm guessing there are more than a few organized rifle clubs in Virginia.

Nah. I thought about it for a few seconds, but I live in a small town, at the cul de sac end of an isolated road, and the house is set back on a hill, a fair piece from the road. Not like he threw it on the doorstep in the projects. I have a signature release on file, and even though he was supposed to disregard that, I couldn't get too upset. I know the guy thought he was doing me a favor, and how pissed can you get a somebody trying to do you a solid? If I saw the guy again, I might say, "Hey, man, don't leave the great big, square, rifle-looking boxes on the step...."

Given the fact that at this point it is barely possible to get UPS, FedEx or anyone else to ship firearms anymore, it is totally escaping me why we want to create even greater hostility to firearms shipments among these people. :banghead:

When one of my CMP rifles was delivered I wasn't home. The guy didn't leave it on my porch, he left it with some guy that I don't know about a mile away. I am not sure how he picked this guy to leave it with but I am guessing that guy was also getting a package delivered and the delivery guy just decided to leave it with him.
So this guy comes to my house and proceeds to give me the third degree about my identity before he will give me my package. Finally I told him, I can tell you exactly who the package is from and what is in it.
That seemed to satisfy him and he gave it to me.

Oh, and there was no note saying they had been there and he decided to randomly pick someone to leave the package with. I didn't know anything until this stranger comes to my door with my package.

Thanks for all the replies. I am sending off my membership application and check to the Garand Collectors Association tomorrow. This will put me in a CMP affiliated club and is the only piece I am missing to be able to order from CMP. I'll be ordering my Garand in a couple of weeks after the GCA can process my application and update CMP with that info.

ScottS- Living up out of sight of the street or road is probably a good thing for packages deilivered to your house when nobody is around.

My houses faces the main street in my development and there is a fair amount of traffic. About 3 years ago, I ordered a set of tires for my car that came to almost $1200 and had them delivered to my house. I requested "signature required" delivery as I didn't want them sitting on the front porch in full view if I wasn't home when UPS showed up.

I was at work when UPS showed up and they just left them on the porch. When I got home and saw them, I went ballistic. The delivery label clearly showed Signature Required on each of the 4 tires. I called the UPS depot and reamed out the manager. He said that the driver had done this kind of thing before and would be disciplined. He said he was sorry for what happened. Not that that would have been a comfort if the tires would have been stolen from me and I would have no proof that the shipment was delivered.

As far as risking firearms delivery from the major freight companies, their regulations are specific and I believe that they have to follow specific federal and BATF rules. A FedEx driver not doing his job and most likely breaking company rules, not to mention various laws, is their problem and the driver should have been dealt with. Just think what the anti's would do if ScottS's rifle had been stolen from the front of his house and then used in a crime.

As responsible gun owners (and buyers) we have to follow the laws when buying our guns. Is it asking too much to get the shippers to do the same?

FedEx used by CMP....

....DCM(Back in the Day) used USPS and you were required to sign for the M1 being delivered or back it went to lock down in postal storage. When my mail Person(heh, PC eh:D !) delivered mine, when still DCM, knew exactly what I was receiving. We stood on the porch and discussed what a good deal it was and wished it was a little easier/simpler of a procedure.

I still have it and it will never be sold or traded.

That will just help convince them that shipping firearms is too much trouble and they will just not allow it at all except from dealer to dealer. They are under no obligation to ship firearms and there isn't enough gun owners to make them care one way or another.

Even to NJ??? I figured I'd need a C&R in a normal state at least!! In NJ, an FFL is probably required.

There is rarely anyone at my home during the day, CMP and FedEx had no problem delivering it to my office. The left-wing lunatics Liberals were astonished. Given that right out of the package the Garand is beautiful gun I got some ooohhss and ahhhsssss. Took one of the anti's to the range and maybe have got him to at least think about gun laws.
I find it amazing that FedEx left a rifle with out someone to sign for it. I can't even get them to drop off mail order clothes or garden stuff with out a signature...

The CMP effectively IS an FFL and does a NICS check on every customer before the rifles are sent out direct to your door. They are the only, rpt. ONLY, entity in the US able to do this as they have a charter directly from the US Congress that allows them to operate in this fashion. This supersedes any State requirements.

Just do it.... :D

Best to all,
Swampy

Garands forever
