CMP out of garands until October?

Last I looked CMP said they will have some Garands by the end of the year. Stuff like this has happened before and more found there way to CMP. Remember that there were only so many made and when they do come back get your order in. I bought a Greek SG last year and what I got was a rebuild that looks almost new. Total mismatch with parts but works fine and something I'll cherish.

They sold out of a shipment of 40,000 Garands in three months--better not miss the boat (literally and figuratively speaking) next go-round.

They aren't going to last forever, y'know.

They have plenty M1's. They have been focusing on getting the carbines out and have not had time to process the M1's.

They will be back later this year. I bet there will be a price increase, I don't know that for a fact though.

I followed the CMP forum for awhile on that point. They really didn't sell 40,000 (I want to say the number was 30,000). Everyone was surprised when they said they were running out of Garands and it turned out the vast majority of those were rusting junk, not even rack grade. They were stripped for usable parts.

Wish it were true. From the Operating Officer of the CMP on 4/13/07:

As I have reported previously, CMP is almost completely out of what we called "USGI Garands" and will probably never receive any more. Any rifles we may get in the future will be returns from overseas and we may or may not know the country of origin. We are also almost completely done with the Inspection / Repair and sale of all the Garands returned from Greece and Denmark. I expect that within the next 30 days (as we fill existing backorders) we will be sold out of all grades of Garands. We have more orders than rifles.

Now for the good news - this is not the end of the road, just a hiccup. We have good reason to believe that we may receive another shipment of Garands sometime this year. Keep in mind that there is no way to predict condition and that it will take anywhere from 4-6 months to get any of these ready for sale - se we can't make any promises about these either.

While Orest has said this is a "hiccup" keep in mind that the pricing of CMP M1s has been steadily rising for the last 10 years or so. I shot my first CMP match in 1998 and I think the pricing for Garands was around $200 at that time. Fast forward to summer 2006 and the Service Grades were going for $550.

Given the above, I'd say that even though we may see more CMP M1s in the future, the pricing is not going to go DOWN. The Select Grade M1s that Orest mentions are going to be priced around $700.

In conclusion, I'd say that if you want a CMP M1 (and I think buying CMP is the best way to avoid a Franken-Garand or worse a reweld receiver M1) I'd get one as soon as they are back "in stock" in October 2007.

Good info from everyone, I'm now properly "motivated" to buy one when they are available again.
