OK, talk me out of an M1 Service Grade from CMP.
I've got a couple of ARs, a Saiga (7.62x39) and a great old Ishapore Enfield (7.62x 51). Everything is a shooter. The ARs are the most accurate; the Enfield is just flat fun to shoot, and the Saiga is an AK47 in a designer dress.
I no longer hunt, just put rounds down range.
The Garand is a true piece of history.
Greek surplus ammo is available, now.
I am not gonna live forever. My son and grandson will get all my "things that go BANG."
Give me some good reasons for NOT getting a CMP Garand. (Other than "She Who Must Be Obeyed" may make me sleep in the garage.)

1.the garage is warm and sticky? (you live in florida I am guessing)

2.you would...umm have to spend more of your kids and grandkids inheritance?

3.think of the senseless killing of trees just so you can enjoy paper targets? (heard this one before from an environmentalist)

4. you might get a garand thumb?

5. you will have another weapon so when the zombies come it will make it just that much more difficult to choose which weapon to use on the zombies?

Getting a service grade M1 Garand will be one of the best things you ever did. They are awesome to shoot. You can always scribble on the paperwork and ask for a WW2 era in Walnut and they will try to fill your order. They are good. Can't beat an M1.

Don't do it--you'll make the rest of your weapons feel small and emfeebled;
they might even need to see a shrink (well, the Enfield will probably not feel too inadequate).

And that greek ammo at .25 per round? Pass it up! Why not shoot little mouse bullets at .50 per pull?

All kidding asside, buy 2. Tell your wife I put you up to it.

The only reason I see would be Garand thumb. That and the risk of divorce from spending too much time at the range.

I don't have a garand but I'd like one. I got a chance tho shoot a CMP garand. It was a field grade and pretty beat up, but was still awesome. Honestly I can't see any negatives.

And remember most Garand thumbs do not come from loading ammo- they come from wiping off that little extra bit of grease with the bolt back or the like. Sort of like playing with a rat trap-watch where ya put the pinkies!:)

I read someone here say that it should be a law that every gun owner own at least one Garand and one Carbine. I fully agree with that.

A Garand is not just a piece of history, its a fantastic rifle that has a great deal of power. Its my goto rifle of choice, and probably my favorite gun that I own. A Garand would also be a fantastic rifle to pass along to your descendants.

Oh, I finally took a picture of the rifle, my Garand came from garandguy. I paid more than you would with CMP, but such is life. It functions great and only has a muzzle wear of about 1, so its definitely in great condition.

[R.LeeErmey]WHAT KIND OF GRABASSTIC DISORGANIZED QUESTION IS THAT???? [/R.LeeErmey]

Seriously, buy the Garand and don't look back. Better yet, buy several.

I dont know if I am the only one, but I have said before that it should be a law that everyone in the United States should be required to own an M1 Garand. The only reason I can think of for you not to get one, is because if you did get one, your Garand would be embarrased to be seen with your a Saiga AK :neener:

I know I prob sound like a broken record on some of these postings about the garand, but some of those pictures show a lack of coating of garand grease on the op rod track.....it just makes my stomach hurt to see the extra wear on the metal because of this :barf:

GarandOwner

I feel awful that you are feeling queasy...Here's a quick pic...the top rifle I shoot all the time (note large amount of Lubriplate slopped in the track.) The lower rifle just showed up from the CMP and I haven't had time to shoot or lube it yet. :)

Steady, man...

If they have any left , by all means get a Garand . Get the best grade they have avalable , as I think they are beginning to scrape the bottom of the barrel , if more do not come back from overseas .

They are fantastic rifles and a hoot to shoot , in addition to being a part of history .

God bless

CMP was scraping the bottom of the barrel just under a year ago. They just received a massive shipment...enough to last several years according to some in the know.

They'll begin shipping later this fall. Right now they are shipping Garands they are putting together from random parts they have laying around (similar to how an Arsenal would so that isn't a detriment). I just got a nice '44 SA from them.

Annoying HH6 is the only reason I can think of, and not a very good one at that.

The only reason I can think of is it is like crack. One hit and your hooked, soon you will want one of every manufacture, then you will need to have some that are all correct and matching, which will require parts rifles to get those matching correct parts. Then you will need more parts because you can't have an inop Garand just sitting there it has to be whole. Next you will sit there holding your precious and decide they need a little brother so begin the cycle all over again with the M1 Carbine. Somewhere along the line you will also decide to upgrade your storage of your precious to a more suitable home (Liberty Presidential Series). So as you sit alone one night holding your precious watching Band of Brother you will decide you need period correct original accessories (web gear, uniform, bayonet, etc).

Besides all that I own one and love it.

Wouldn't it be totally cool if you had a Krag or M1903 that your father or grandfather gave you? Something from WWI or similar?

Buy one NOW. The CMP can be obliterated with the stroke of a pen and all those M1s would go to the smelter.

Likely? Not until Jan 2009. Possible? Yes.

You said it Jamesb. First it was my Garands, then the M1 Carbine, then the 1911, then the 1903A3. Plus I have a WWII paratrooper uniform......Last night My roomate and I were watching M*A*S*H......it was the one where a wounded colonel had a Colt Single Action Army revolver......now I want one of those. Only one correction: WWII arms is worse than crack....I had to sell all my crack to get money for guns (jk!!!)
