CMP Garand

Give me some good reasons for NOT getting a CMP Garand. (Other than "She Who Must Be Obeyed" may make me sleep in the garage.)
Because getting One CMP Garand leads to getting Two. Then you've got to buy a field manual as well, FM 23-5. Clips, a score or three. Ammo, a case or two. Reloading (don't really want to use Commercial ammo doncha know) will be a necessity eventually. I highly recommend both bayonets (16" and 10") w/ scabbards as well. But, think of this... When you buy THREE CMP M1 Garands, you can use the stacking swivels, which I think is a must since they're on the weapon and are designed to be used, so definitely buy three, not just one.

Might as well buy a cot and a surplus fart sack for those evenings you'll be spending in the garage with your newfound surplus weaponry and related implements. :D

So, as you can see, it's really quite difficult to buy and own just, A (singular) CMP Garand. It was a rifle squad weapon and should be thought of in that manner. You must accessorize. Unless of course you're wanting an M1-D sniper rifle... which is another whole ball of wax which we will not get into at this time. :p

And then there's the Carbine, and then you've got to have an 03 and an 03-A3, maybe a 1917 Enfield... you DO have a WWII USGI 1911 too don't you? ;)

Number 1 reason for not getting a Garand.........

There is no reason to not get a Garand!
Go buy it and enjoy!!

dont worry iamkris I wasnt singleling you out, there were a few pictures from others that showed a lacking of grease. :( poor poor garands

I went to the South Store last March intent on buying a Garand. Came back home with two really nice Field Grade Dane returns. The wife didn't complain too much...

Get one, you won't regret it!

Holy crap, this is really making me want to order ANOTHER Garand from CMP. I just need to get the marksmanship qualification then I too can order from them.

Lots of ways to get the marksmanship qual filled...not all of them require you to go through a match...FFL01/03, CCW, even a letter from a club stating you went through a clinic that had live fire will work.

... because if you buy one, you'll be addicted. No one can own JUST one!!!

(or two, or three, or four, or five ....)

quick question, I am qualified to be a member through association. Now what else do i have to do to get an CMPM1 ps I am only 16 so I will have to do it through a parent.

Then your parent will have to meet all of the requirements. Does any of your parents have a CWP? If so then sign them up for the Garnad Collectors Assn. and they will quailfy if they are US citizens and have a copy of their birth certificate.

No but my mom is a memeber of the gun range I belong to so I'll have to convince her to shoot in one of the competitions so she'll get the firearms qualification sheet.

Pigspitter, It don't matter which competition it is, just so it's 50rds. I satisfied that requirement by shooting two 40rd smallbore sillouette matches in one day. This one RO signed off... actually he wrote a letter telling CMP I'd been shooting various competitions with them. He also paid me the unsolicited complement, in that letter, of saying I was safe and competent with weapons.

What state are you in? I ask because while the Garand Collector Association is a great organization, I found the Georgia Sport Shooting Association to be less expensive and more local to me. Chances are, your local club or state rifle association may be CMP affiliated, in which case, you and/or your mother may already satisfy that qualification.

Don't get just one! Get one for each of your grandchildren for cyring out loud god forbid there be a fight over your collection when your gone!

I was watching American Rifleman TV tonight... they talked about the Ohio Ordnance BAR compared to the original. $4200 for the O.O. as opposed to $30-50K. But the new ones are semi-auto only. Now for an 18lb. .30cal. weapon that was supposed to be full auto, I wouldn't settle for semi, even for a range toy. But that's just me. I'd much rather have my 9.5lb .30-06 M1 Garand.

My Granddaddy was a BARman back in 1944-45... he told me he could shoot it one round per trigger pull, but he didn't claim to be the only one who could; he said you can shoot it any way you want. But Granddaddy also told me the BAR was a magnet for Japanese incoming. When he got the chance, he traded the BAR for a Garand which he told me he liked much better.

Noooo!

Don't do it. Garands are over-rated pieces of junk. They are inaccurate and unreliable. They are a poorly designed copy of the WWI French Chauchat machine gun. Soldiers hated them and threw them away whenever they could, in favor of Arisakas or a good Carcano.

The current demand for M1's is a right-wing conspiracy designed to drum up support for the Neo-con's military-industrial complex and their greedy desire to take over the world and subjugate the pooor people, stealing their oil to destroy our atmosphere so our world will be more habitable for the space aliens..

So please, resist the urge and go buy a good SKS or something. The fate of the world depends on you.

OK, not really. I have two of them myself, and if I thought I could get away with it and not sleep alone, I would be buying a third.
If you appreciate WWII history and enjoy shooting, the Garand is for you. You will not regret it.

HTML:
I've got a couple of ARs, a Saiga (7.62x39) and a great old Ishapore Enfield (7.62x 51).

If you get a Garand....you'll finally own a rifle:evil:

BAD NEWS: :(
Orest Michaels (CMP's COO) has stated in the CMP forums that the CMP probably won't ship any Garand orders received now until next year! They have just exhausted the supply of parts for their build-ups and have not began sorting and testing the new batch (been hinted at that it is ~100,000 rifles, Greek returns) yet.

fatelk - you really need to examine the swivel swing at the top of your two Garands. It's called a "stacking swivel. It's there so that three Garands can stand together, safe, on a tripod. You don't just "want" a third Garand. You need one.:evil::evil:

Believe it or not (true story), I made exactly that point to my wife just this afternoon. She didn't buy it, so I guess I'm not either.

Maybe after tax time next year.. On the other hand I have an NVA SKS I've been planning on listing on gunbroker. It should bring enough to buy a good service grade M1 when the CMP is ready to part with one.

Mustang98, it's not a copy.... and Ive shot an original Garand, 30-06. Fun but not as fun as the BAR. Plus I was being facetious...as was the point of this post.

p.s. My Grandfather used a Garand in the battle of the bulge.

PIGSPITTER!!! Find a 4-H club or small bore club in your area and start shooting small bore. We have a local 14 year old who places well shooting a M-1 in high power matches. He also shoots small bore. The 4-H club had a couple of RRA Nm AR's donated to them not so long ago. I look forword to seeing how our JR does with one of those.

Some years ago, I made the decision to get my CMP number. I wandered into the CMP at Camp Perry, and left with a Greek Garand. Aquiring some military 30-06 and a few more En-block clips from a friend, I journeyed to the firing range.
All I really knew about the rifle was that it was rather heavy and the military had apparently gotten rid of them because the 30-06 cartridge kicked too much for the boot's.
I remember chambering the first round, thinking, if it kicks too much and I don't like it, I can always just put it in the safe.
bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang *sproing!*
Hmmmm
bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. bang *sproing!*
Oooh.
Me, later that night, arriving home. My wife (former Army MP) asks "What did you think of it?"
Me. "I'm thinking of selling my AR-15.
Her, "Oh, don't do that, I like that gun."
I now own three garands, they are my favorite weapon. They are addicting! Take my advice, run, don't walk to the nearest CMP, Enjoy!
Pick up a few of the sealed Greek tin's, too.

Thanks, all great advice. But the "I had to sell my crack to buy guns" was the tipping point.:D
I drank the Koolaid, the whole pitcher:
*Ordered a Service Grade from CMP (if they don't ship til next year, it's OK. It just gives me longer to come up with a semi-believeable story of why I NEED another gun for "She Who Must Be Obeyed".
* Ordered a 50" tan leather sling. (Hey it deserves to look good.)
* Ordered a case of the Greek surplus .30-06.

I'll have to follow-up on when the M1s will be shipping. I know I can come up with a story really fast, not that she'll believe it, of course. Hmmm, maybe another diamond tennis bracelet?
