CMP Garand

Orest Michaels (CMP's COO) has stated in the CMP forums that the CMP probably won't ship any Garand orders received now until next year! They have just exhausted the supply of parts for their build-ups and have not began sorting and testing the new batch (been hinted at that it is ~100,000 rifles, Greek returns) yet.

So are the new batch of Garands not Springfields?

Also, in that thread they just talk about service grades, does that mean you can still get field grades before next year?

Yes, they are Springfields, as well as probably some of everything else too. These rifles were loaned to Greece and have been returned to the US Army, then transferred to the CMP for sale. They are just listing Springfields now because they don't know how many of what other makes there are in the shipment (~100,000 rifles), but by probability know that there will be lots of Springfields--it's the most common.

Look for other manufacturers to be listed early next year.

The biggest complaint about the Greek returns is that many of them have been refinished with something that looks like black spray paint and restocked with a very rough birch stock.

That said, in the last Greek batch from 2003 there were a FEW unissued in original factory wrap Garands, some with consecutive serial numbers. Of course, they sell those for MUCH more than $600!

I don't know if the field grades are still available or not. It looks like they were as of last month, but I am told that the stores don't have any service grade and the field grades are very few on the shelves, at least until they crack the crates on the new batch. I would assume the store inventory reflects the stock for mail orders as well.

It is also rumored that this will be the LAST transfer of Garands from the Army. I dunno, but it looks like that may be the case since it appears that the Army just cleared out their warehouse--they just transferred all of the 1903 and Garand drill rifles (demilled) as well as the 1903 receivers too. They even sold some to Southern Ohio Gun--That's VERY unusual.

BTW, I've seen some photos of the ones that went to Southern Ohio--they are total junk. The CMP doesn't send out garbage like that.

SPITTER!!! Find a 4-H club or small bore club in your area and start shooting small bore. We have a local 14 year old who places well shooting a M-1 in high power matches. He also shoots small bore. The 4-H club had a couple of RRA Nm AR's donated to them not so long ago. I look forword to seeing how our JR does with one of those.
I'm a member of a NRA affiliated gun range and I have filled the requirements for the shooting certificate because I shoot in the vintage service rifle and .22silli matches.. However, I am only 16 and I don't think they will let a parent fill the order form if they aren't qualified.

Pigspitter, It don't matter which competition it is, just so it's 50rds. I satisfied that requirement by shooting two 40rd smallbore sillouette matches in one day. This one RO signed off... actually he wrote a letter telling CMP I'd been shooting various competitions with them. He also paid me the unsolicited complement, in that letter, of saying I was safe and competent with weapons.

What state are you in? I ask because while the Garand Collector Association is a great organization, I found the Georgia Sport Shooting Association to be less expensive and more local to me. Chances are, your local club or state rifle association may be CMP affiliated, in which case, you and/or your mother may already satisfy that qualification.
Thanks, I am a member of the GSSA because of my membership at the Marion Road Gun Club, and I have completed more than a few 50rd smallbore competitions so I can get the letter written. My Mother is also a member of the club but she hasn't shot smallbore competitions yet. Can I get her to order the rifle for me if I am qualified or is she qualified enough to order it herself?

Do either of your parents have a CHL? That plus a $25 Garand Club membership gets them [you] a CMP Garand.

CHL? not sure what that is. I'm not very good with firearms liscense terms, all I know about is the guns.

It stands for "Concealed Handgun License", aka "CCW", etc. In Georgia, we call that a "Georgia Firearms License".

Is your membership annual or lifetime?

I've been a member of Chatuge Gun Club in Hiawassee, GA and that didn't automatically get me in the GSSA.

Right, sorry, shouldn't have used our state shorthand. A concealed handgun license or permit, yes. Doesn't look like Maine has a specific name for it.
