I finally got around to submitting my first order to the CMP for an M1 Garand, and a case of .30-06 ammo. Check has been cashed and order confirmed.

This afternoon I found a call tag in the mailbox that FedEx attempted at 08:30 this morning to deliver a package requiring signature. Not the "sign here and we'll drop the package tomorrow" kind of signature, but the "We need you to answer the door and sign it tomorrow" kind of signature.

The problem is that I live alone and I start work at 8:00 a.m., leaving the house typically at 07:25. When I called FedEx's number, the woman informed me that the driver would stop again tomorrow. When I told her I wouldn't be here tomorrow either, she invited me to stop by their terminal to pick up the package.

The terminal is open Monday through Friday only, from 9:00 to 5:00. As previously mentioned, I start work at 8:00 -- and the FedEx terminal she wants me to go to is 45 minutes to an hour away from either my home OR my place of work. So it appears that my case of .30-06 ammo is going to be heading back to Anniston, AL. That's bad enough, but ...

... What happens when they try to deliver my Garand?

Has anyone else gone through this? Is there a solution? I can't skip a day of work to sit on my thumbs waiting around for the FedEx driver to show up. Hasn't the CMP program figured out that not every household has a non-working member who can just sit around waiting for the white and blue truck to drive by?

well the CMP doesnt decide shipping hours. thats all fedex. and they cant just leave a 500$ rifle and case of ammo on your door. the money involved is just too risky. the fact that its a gun only makes it worse

I understand the frustation of the Fed Ex terminal only being open 9 to 5. There isn't much else the CMP can do though. It's a rifle. Someone has to sign for it. It sucks that Fed Ex has those hours though, but I don't think any of the other delivery services would be any better. The CMP doesn't have that much control on that end of the process.

Do you have a neighbor you really trust who would be home to accept delivery?

If not, can you arrange to leave work early or go in late one day to get the ammo. Of course, you'd have to do the same thing later for the rifle.

like my 8 year old boy said last time we went to NASCAR and someone crashed

" take it like a man and stop crying"

:neener:

All you have to do is have FedEx do a "Hold For Pickup". Typically, you will ask them to deliver it to a FedEx/Kinko's and you can pick it up from the FedEx/Kinko's yourself.

I've done that several times with CMP Garands.

Actually they can just leave them on your doorstep. At least that is what the FedEX driver did with mine. I asked my wife if they needed a signature and she said all they did was ring the doorbell. They left the crate of ammo then the rifle about 2 weeks later.

Fed-Ex is generally open on Saturday. Try to get them to hold it for you until then. Of course, it is nice that you know when he will be there. Could you just tell work that you have something to do in the morning and you will be in late?

Hate to complain - but I have similar concerns on the ammo. Fedex told me that I had to sign for it in person. No one else was allowed to. "Direct signature".

That is silly for ammo.:banghead:

I asked them to deliver late friday when I would be home - and that worked out OK.

I have ordered cases of 7.62x54r and 8mm and 223 - all delivered to my house. The fed-ex or UPS guy just dropped it on my front porch, rang the doorbell and walked away. No big deal to them.

Well except one older delivery guy who brought the 20lb box to the door, and when I asked him if there was another he said 'Yes, but it's too heavy for me.' So I went out to the truck with him and schlepped the 60lb box myself. ;-) Case of Yugo 8mm is worth the extra work!

FedEx just dropped the ammo off at the doorstep on my last order. But the rifle was another story, yeah, I had to leave work early and pick it up at the termianal. Once you get it home and open the box, it will be worth the effort. Really nothing the CMP has any control over.

That is weird. Both times I have ordered CMP rifles (and a case of ammo with each one) I had them sent to my parents's house and my dad signed for them. They didn't give him any trouble.

I think this happens a lot more in rural areas. My parents's place is in a rural area. As mentioned in the post above this one, they didn't have a problem with him signing for my rifles and ammo. When I order ammo they also drop it off on my folks's porch and walk off.

Needless to say, my experience was significantly different for shipments to downtown Philadelphia (which is where I live). I live alone and am never home during "normal" hours. No way they would leave a package unattended in Philadelphia, so I had to drive down to the depot in South Philadelphia to pick up the package.

Fedex won't hold ammo at the terminal for pickup. I tried this on my last ammo order from CMP and it was a no go.

Send a friend to pick it up for you, maybe? Or relative, or someone who can legally sign for it who lives at your address? Or maybe take a day off work (sick leave, anyone?)

you could always have it delivered to your work. I bought my garand while I was in college, no guns on campus so I had it shipped to my father's work, he signed for it with no problems.

If you read the CMP pages closely, this should have been no surprise to you. You have to make accommodations to get anything that they ship to you. I now use my attorney and have it shipped to his office. But now I only get 2/3 of ammo and I'm missing 1/3 of the Garands.
He's actually a close friend and he gets to play with my toys when ever he wants to, since it is his land I'm playing with my toys on! Besides, there is always someone there during business hours to sign for my packages from the CMP.

fed-ex sucks

you're just lucky that fed-ex didn't just throw it in the yard and leave. thats what they do with every package i get. luckily none of the neighbors have wandered down the drive or it hasn't rained on anything!

Eightball has the right idea....
Or maybe take a day off work (sick leave, anyone?)

Now what better sick day could one ask for , get up early, nice breakfast, large coffee, reading the morning paper, gun rags , whatever, waiting for the FedEx truck to bring me a box 'o joy. :D

They often will--it all depends on the driver and the 'geo-politics' of the area.
The Pi$$er is that when you WANT that service you can't get it for love nor money.

My terminal closes at 8 or 9 (this is were the trucks stock up and get dropped off not a store front) sucks about the 5. Here is a simple way to fix this problem. If you cant get there before they close.

Call Fedex, since it was a failed delivery (this only works after the first failed delivery) have the shipping address changed. Ship it to your work, or a friends house. Sometimes Fedex will want the sender to be the one to change the address so if that is so, have CMP do it. Hope this helps

CMP requires signatures, its not fed-ex that is requiring them. If you read the CMP site you would know this.

Hello! do you really want an M1 sitting on your front porch all day while you are at work! :barf: come on folks get some common sense!

I have all mine delievered to a postal store. it costs me $3 per package to have them recieve them on my behalf. They then call me and I just go over after work and them pick them up. The last time i got a case of ammo there they clerk was all excited saying he had never received something that cool before.

LoL When the fedex guy delivered my ammo, i saw the truck coming and raced out there to help him. When he open the truck up and saw that i was the house for the ammo he looked at the crate and said with a sad look "oh its that one" and breathed really heavy. I offered to help him unload it. 760 rds of 30-06 is not light.

I beleive that if a C&R was used to purchase a rifle from the CMP they MUST deliver it to the address on the license. Not sure, but I think that is how it works. Good luck.

I believe the CMP only uses the C&R as proof of your "shooting related activity". They don't actually log it to, or transfer it on, your C&R. Or so I've been told.

That is true-- it has nothing to do with the weapon sale but filling the 'shooting' requ. on the cmp's end. But if YOU ARE a C/R #3 FFL--you MUST log the weapon in although it is not coming in via your FFL. NOT to digress, but since it came up...
(I know we've all had this talk before:p ).
