LZ Granderson has an op/ed piece in CNN that is one of the most (if not the most) reasoned, reasonable, thoughtful and IMHO correct points of view on the issue.

To summarize, he says that as long as we keep making the debate about guns, the problem will never be solved.

I thought his argument was spot on. There's shootings related to poverty and drugs (the vast majority of the statistics, rarely talked about in high-profile cases); there's shootings related to mental illness or terrorism (statistically tiny, but very high profile). Neither of these are an issue with your average law-abiding firearms owners, just like car collectors and automotive enthusiasts like Lay Leno aren't to blame for the tens of thousands of automotive accidents each year.

I believe LZ is one of the better opinion writers as well. This well written piece will hopefully stick around on the site for a good while, hopefully as an example to other writers. Calmly stated opinions, with relevant logical paths described to back them up, and I didn't catch much if any of him "knowing not of which he speaks" as is so hopelessly common in gun journalism.

He almost gained back all the respect I lost for him after the Newtown shooting (after which he committed all of the above transgressions, though perhaps not as greviously as many of his ilk). The important thing to take away from the article, is that anti's are perhaps finally waking up to the fact that the NRA and "bulk" gun owners are unassailable. We've been telling them for years that they are both wrong and foolish to target us with mass bans and prohibitions, but they retorted we were merely part of the mean "gun culture" that thwarts their efforts at most every turn despite being 'marginalized and insignificant'

Though I know their ultimate goals have not changed, I would very much welcome a renewed campaign from anti's that focuses less on guns and gun owners, than on the causes and victims of gun violence (even better would be a focus on violence in general). Such an approach would actually prove capable of engaging us in the "debate" they claim to want. I truly believe that the vast majority, if not all anti's, sincerely do wish to improve the lot of people who are or may be subject to violence (but only from firearms). Perhaps, just perhaps, the antis' will move bans/laws on mainstream gunowners to a lower priority, and find their goals actually align with the Gun Rights/Self Defense crowd, if only for a brief while ;) (when their guard is down we'll take them to a shooting range and chant "one of us")

That said, expect the creeping incrementalism to creep towards gradually more restrictive mental health guidelines. There is now a nation-wide mechanism to use this means to reliably prohibit entire classes with very little recourse, according to medical rules that are not legally codified or generated by democratically-accountable officials. Very fertile ground for expansion of authority. Very tough to challenge. Be aware that it is also becoming increasingly acceptable to question the very sanity of people who disagree or are undesirable --probably an unintended consequence of the admirable campaign to make mental illness a more publicly discussed issue in this country. Half the op-eds on Washington Post have some variation on "Right Wing Insanity" as their title at any given time. Most .gov officials would "call me crazy" for thinking that machine-guns be regulated as "loosely" as semi-autos; would they treat me crazy as well if said so out loud? :uhoh:

Oh no, PRISM just told them I wrote that! Or is that just paranoia? Whatevs, someone's at the door...:D

Better than the last CNN opinion piece I read last week. It was one of the thicker anti gun pieces.

I was quite surprised to see such a piece written by LZ.
LZ is one of the smartest guys in that business. He's by no means pro-gun. But it appears that he gets it. I've always felt he gets most of what he talks about. I don't always agree with his take, but his take on things at least comes from "getting it". He's never going to speak at an NRA convention or anything like that.

This is what I have kind of been hoping for. We need some of the, let's just call them "NON gun" not anti-gun, the "NON gun" people...people who don't give a rip about guns even if they might academically agree with the 2ndA and the RKBA...they just don't care about it because they have no plans to own or shoot a gun. That's their right. What we need however, is a whole host of them to VOTE against right robbing legislation and legislators. We need a guy, a more "normal, guy on the street" that may be more like LZG than us...to vote against taking away rights even if it's a right he has no interest in excercising. That's how to win this political battle. Not that we're losing it now.

I was quite surprised to see such a piece written by LZ.

Same here. CNN tends to group their op ed writers into their "proper" castes and have them focus on only those things. It seems that LZ is usually writing about African American/Gay issues while Reuban Navarette is always a one trick pony for illegal immigration. I certainly wouldn't have seen this coming from LZ. I remember after the Zimmerman trial he did a hack job about how there isn't a safe place for him and his partner to raise his son, because a gang banger may kill him in the ghetto and a CCW permit holder may kill him in the suburbs.

Kudos for LZ for stepping out of his "assigned" role.

In related news, Satan was recently spotted at LL Bean purchasing a down parka and a pair of snowshoes.
Yes perhaps this is true. Perhaps the underworld has frozen over. And a guy like LZ Granderson, a man with no interest in guns or his own RKBA, has come to understand that his personal view with regard to himself (as well as his general liberal viewpoint) does not impose upon us to surrender our rights just because he does not share that love of this specific right the way we do. This makes those like him dangerous because a vote for and virulent anti-gun politician is (or maybe was) a thing given with no thought of other rights, not relelated to RKBA.

So maybe the big freeze over means that at least one such person gets that taking away rights may be a very slippery slope as well as ineffective in terms of the actions of criminals.

my goodness, something rational and thought-provoking actually emerged from CNN.

Just this one comment needs to published all over the United States.

"Because like it or not, the folks spraying our cities with bullets are not NRA members or legal gun owners. And despite the tendency to tie it all together, they have nothing to do with the Adam Lanzas of the world".

Outstanding article!!
