Larry Vickers advocates keeping the BUIS up at all times in case your red dot goes down for some reason. When they co-witness, this clutters the sight picture and will slow down your shots. If your BUIS are in the lower third of your view, they aren't really in the way since you can only see them with your peripherals while you shoot with the red dot. The dot goes down, you shift the rifle's position a half an inch, and you're back in the fight.
