Will an Eotech 512 co-witness with Magpul BUIS sights on a standard AR flattop?

Will I need a riser?

yes it will. You wont need a riser. if you mount the 512 directly, the BUIS will co-witness at the same point of the Eotech. If you use the riser, the sights will co witness in the bottom 1/3 of the scope

I always wondered what the Eotech risers were for. I never thought about how some folks like the irons in the lower 1/3.

Larry Vickers advocates keeping the BUIS up at all times in case your red dot goes down for some reason. When they co-witness, this clutters the sight picture and will slow down your shots. If your BUIS are in the lower third of your view, they aren't really in the way since you can only see them with your peripherals while you shoot with the red dot. The dot goes down, you shift the rifle's position a half an inch, and you're back in the fight.
