Fear not, I intentionally misspelled Krag, because that's what my co-worker called it. At first I thought it was just a pet name for it, like Remmy or Winny. But as his boasting progressed I knew I was in for a story. Understand that this guy claims to have been in every branch of Special Forces ever created, he is a former millionaire CIA operative and even jumped out of an airplane without a chute from like 4000 feet and now currently works in a foundry.
So of course, I HAD to hear this story. It starts out quite believable, he got the rifle for $80 from a friend who found it in his parents attic and he uses it in the Michigan U.P. for deer hunting. However, I did not know that at 480 yards a 30-40 would blow a hole clean through a deer and leave an exit wound the size of a basket ball. I also did not know that the bullet drop of a 30-40 was only a half inch at 500 yards. This gun is sooooooo powerful that he can only shoot it 4 or 5 times before his shoulder is so badly bruised that he can't move it. His father shot it once and the recoil spun him a quarter of the way around. And last but certainly not least, I said to him, 30-40 Krag? That's an old military rifle. At which point he cut me off and said. YEP! It's the Army's sniper rifle.
I know I should have confronted him with the truth, not that it would have made a difference, But he really seemed to enjoy telling the story so I just let it go at that and went back to work.
