Fear not, I intentionally misspelled Krag, because that's what my co-worker called it. At first I thought it was just a pet name for it, like Remmy or Winny. But as his boasting progressed I knew I was in for a story. Understand that this guy claims to have been in every branch of Special Forces ever created, he is a former millionaire CIA operative and even jumped out of an airplane without a chute from like 4000 feet and now currently works in a foundry.
So of course, I HAD to hear this story. It starts out quite believable, he got the rifle for $80 from a friend who found it in his parents attic and he uses it in the Michigan U.P. for deer hunting. However, I did not know that at 480 yards a 30-40 would blow a hole clean through a deer and leave an exit wound the size of a basket ball. I also did not know that the bullet drop of a 30-40 was only a half inch at 500 yards. This gun is sooooooo powerful that he can only shoot it 4 or 5 times before his shoulder is so badly bruised that he can't move it. His father shot it once and the recoil spun him a quarter of the way around. And last but certainly not least, I said to him, 30-40 Krag? That's an old military rifle. At which point he cut me off and said. YEP! It's the Army's sniper rifle.

I know I should have confronted him with the truth, not that it would have made a difference, But he really seemed to enjoy telling the story so I just let it go at that and went back to work.

I've found it's easier to let guys like that continue to be a legend in their own mind. If you confront them they'll hold to what they are saying and in some cases get violent. Now if they are spraying this BS in order to sell the gun then I call them on it.

I recently had a guy telling me that an Argentine 1927 (sistema colt DGMFAP) was actually made in Hartford Conn and they are all worth a premium over GI 1911's. And feeding me a load of how they were used by the OSS in WWII. I called BS to his face explained to him I own all Clawson's books and have been collecting 1911's for 10 years and oh yeah I own a gun parts company that makes parts for 1911's. He finally admitted that he was full of crap and trying to make a sale.

"This sad little lizard told me that he was a brontosaurus on his mother's side. I did not laugh; people who boast of ancestry often have little else to sustain them. Humoring them costs nothing and adds to the happiness in a world in which happiness is in short supply."
-Lazarus Long (Heinlein)

I think that goes for tall tales and fish stories about prowess like the OP's "hero." You did right in my mind. Thanks for sharing the story. :)

You missed your opportunity. You should have buttered him up and told him he got a pretty fair deal on that gun, but you'd love to have one for your collection and offered him twice his money. Even if it had been "bubbaized" $160 would have been a steal.

Don't you know that the laws of physics and nature have been suspended here on the U.P.? For example, this year we have very successfully resisted having a spring season, let alone summer!

I got a Krag for $40 OTD recently. I need to research it more, it has the 1902 or 1903 tyoe rear sight but I think it's an NRA version.

Anyways a local gun chain adverizes guns and they are a bunch of dummies sometimes. I know we can't know everything but still, they are in the gun business after all.

They advertize a .30-40 Krag as being chambered in ".30-40 CRAIG"!

I guess "Kraggers" are chamberd in "Craig".

Well, the Hartford made Argentine Colts are worth more than the Sistemas, but not more than USGI Colts. And the OSS did like Sistemas because they were the same guns they were used to, but not made in the US. So he wasn't all that far off base.

As for the "Krager"....

It's a shame that such an idiot has a Krag. They are quite nice rifles.

As for the idiot, well they're a dime a dozen around here. Recently had a Walmart counter guy tell me he had an AR15 and he'd bought all the "springs needed to make it full auto." Besides claiming he was going to commit a felony, in the presence of multiple witnesses, he comes across as the village idiot. I'm not for gun control, but couldn't we find a way to get the <80 IQ people away from guns?

be thankful that the guy you have working for you, and I AM paraphrasing here, hasn't been the "paymaster for the Seals...had to go in with them to make sure they were paid even when they were deployed. Also his daughter has a full ride scholarship due to the patronage of the Queen of England." Sadly, he is a field engineer with our company and I have to deal with him from time to time.

I actually FEAR bringing up the fact I have a modest collection of firearms with this person...the oral diarrhea might be too much to take. :(

As for the OP...I can only shudder as to what that Krag is going through right now. Unfortunately not all firearms receive a proper home. :(

Are you kidding, these guys are worth their weight in gold. Tons more entertaining than anything on TV. I work with one who was a gunsmith. But that was in the 1600's in Germany. Turns out it was 4 live's ago. I drop whatever I'm doing to listen to his stories.

We need to start a fund to ensure that all good guns have good homes. I don't care if these idiots have deactivated highpoints, but they shouldn't be allowed to molest classic guns.

"...sad little lizard told me..." That's at least possible.
Listened to a CF militia plug telling his buddy, on a public range, long ago, that it was impossible to shoot an FN C1A1(Canadian made FAL) left handed . Yep. I asked him how I managed to shoot 'expert' with one left handed. "Well, it's hard." says he. I stopped embarassing the twit. Being a nice guy and all.
C1A1's, like all FAL's, are left hand operated. The safety and op handle are on the left side.
"...due to the patronage of the Queen of England..." Ask him what Liz's last name is. Then say, "Engineers dig holes."

:what: where is this store? With deals like that, I'd be willing to fly/drive to it, and flop out my C&R license and wallet and have a field day!:D

I have a 30-40 Krag 1902 I think, I got from my grandfather (source of many of my guns). IT is a good shooting gun, but I was unawre of it special abilities, I am happy I can now use it to it's full potential :)

I was a private sale, a nephew selling off a bunch of his deceased uncles guns he could care less about. I posted about it some in the general gun discussion forum a month or so ago. All very worn and mostly sporterized though. Almost all had makeshift recoil pads made of sponges and duct tape!

I got my friend a 1952 vintage Win 94 .30-30 but with an added peep sight and a Rem 550 .22lr for $200 otd and I got a Win 62a somewhat worn for $100otd.

How much is "Kragger" ammo going for these days?
