In your opinion did the spear kill the pigs faster then your .470?

:) ;)

Strum,

I'd have to say that a well placed double shoulder shot with a 500gr X out of the ole .470NE kills em so quick they actually think they got away.. :D

The .470 just knock out and kills them instantaly they usually don't even wigle.

However I hit one boar behind the shoulder through the lungs and he definatley took longer to die than the spear kill. He ran abput 100 yards with two ..470's through his lungs!

So never say never..

From what I hear, and was told when first I tried spearing hogs.... there are two reasons why the classic boar spear has a solid stop or cross-guard immediately behind the blade.

(1) So that the blade does not overpenetrate and skewer your faithful hound.

(2) So that the annoyed piggy is not able to come up the shaft at you, when 6 feet of spear is all that is keeping him away from your tender pink shins.

I know the feeling of surprise at how easily the spear blade penetrates.
I put it down to adrenaline. Mine, I mean, not the pig's.

Cheers.......... Cooch

Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

"Use enough stick."

Great tale, and great post! You obviously did use enough stick.

interesting thread, I'd wondered what those Cold Steel spears were used for

sounds like they can be quite humane, I had heard this was true when deer are run with dogs and speared in Europe as well

must be quite the rush closing in on the dogs with the cornered hog!
