Just got another Cold Steel DVD the other day. This one highlights Cold Steel's brand of pepper spray, Inferno. I know a lot of people are turned off by Cold Steel's owner/president Lynn C. Thompson, but I always get a kick out of watching his DVDs.

Anyway, does anybody have any practical experience with this product? I must admit, the DVD made it look pretty good. He blasts a lot of orange pepper foam at targets. Years ago I volunteered to take a blast of Smith and Wesson Mk6 in the face, and I had Fox Lab Pepper sprayed on my hand (that was unpleasant enough), so I feel from first hand experience those products should work in most self defense situations. Right now I'm carrying Fox Labs.

Cold Steel claims they use a superior propellant in their produce, HFC134A. They also use two kinds of pepper super-finely ground. Is this just marketing hype, or is this a quality defensive product you can bet your wife's life on? Does anybody know?

Hello Bruise Lee:

You gotta hand it to Lynn C. Thompson for showmanship--at least! It looks to me like his pepper spray foam is at least as good as the other stuff out there. I carried another brand for several years when I was in college and didn't want to risk a felony conviction for being an otherwise law abiding citizen with a gun on campus. If you REALLY want to know if it works, spray a tiny bit on your finger than put some on your face. Ouch! Did you notice how hesitant Lynn was to get hit by this stuff a second time? He looked rattled to me.

Will Inferno stop multiple armed robbers holding up your local bank? Probably not. Would I rather have some Inferno (or genuine Mace) than nothing when confronted with two thugs or a large dog? Ayup.

My guess is their spray works.

My guess is that their claims of superior components are roughly on par with their claims of superior steel used in their knives and such these days.

Also, I wouldn't bet anybody's life on pepper spray.

Best use I can see for it by an average lady is to spray it behind them while running away.
Kinda like those stuntplanes that leave a smoke trail :)

No matter what your flavor of tool is, unless you have the situation awareness to avoid trouble, or the mind set and training to deal with said trouble, when it sneaks up on you,
discusion of tool selection is moot.

no it isn't, bikerdoc.

Mindset comes before situational awareness, and the stereotypical housewife does not have the mindset to train, or even consider seeing the world as the ugly place it is, therefore negating situational awareness.

Thus, said stereotypical housewife will not train with a knife, gun, or tazer.

Therefore, something considerably easy to use and apply is called for, such as pepper spray.

doesn't get more simple than spray and run.

I would recommend something over 2.5 ounces, and be specific with what she wants

Davidsdivad,

You're right.

I keep forgetting about that other group. I am very fortunate to surrounded by a bunch of redneck, kick butt females.

Gotta get out more. Get more involved in educating people.

Thanks for the reality check.

Doc

Right on bikerdoc: I know the feeling. I'm dating a 6' tall russian girl that almost put a hari krishna dude in a headlock in LA, hahahah!

I am puzzled at how people (not necessarily in this thread) diss cold steel for their informercial style DVDs. First they are very entertaining, and second, they do use their own products and demonstrate them. I wish more makers would do the same thing.

I know some people have a personal beef with the owner of Cold Steel.

Let's not forget millions of people in certain states can't legally carry a gun, mail order ammo, buy double edged knives,, high capacity mags, Tasers, or even blow guns! I'd rather have pepper mace than just my bare hands. Of course, some states even band that!

well, not really "their own products". i don't know if they actually make the goofier items like the polymer bat, but i can tell you Coldsteel does NOT nor have they ever MADE knives.

somebody correct me, if i am wrong, but i am 99% certain CS has never MADE a knife.

that said, i do like alot of the products SOLD by Coldsteel and have a Recon Tanto.

Oh also - DAVIDSDIVAD, what other than pepper and propellant is in OC? i mean maybe some type of binding agent or solution, but is there somthing in it that adds to the effectiveness? as far as understood, there wasn't, but i'm ready to learn something new.

Basically, you're taking the essential oils out of the pepper via a fractionating reaction(I think), which makes it much more potent than if you just finely ground peppers and shook it up with solution.
