Collapsible Batons

I Just bought a collapsible baton for carry purposes but never really had any training with them;
Anyone here uses/carry collapsible batons?

Any advice will be welcome!!!

Look up ASP training. Though oriented towards LEO, it is simple and effective. And be sure you have a quality baton. A top-of-line ASP will run about $80, delivered. (21" chrome is $73.99 from LAPoliceGear.com)

We have many threads on collapsable batons, batons and canes and their use. Training is important to get the most benefit from the compromise that a collapsable baton represents.

I have ASP training and certification which covers me here in TN. Look for training either by an ASP instructor or one of the other collapsable baton manufacturers. They'll emphasize the less lethal uses. I also have training in escrima, which does not.

I've carried for years and still do to this day except when I go to work (secured federal property). Had training back when I was in security. Main pointer I give everyone about batons: Get a good name-brand. These crappy made-in-who-knows-where knockoff have a tendency to get bent or even break after a few hits. Personally I like the Monadnock Autolock line. They're heavier than ASP (has it's pros and cons) and I really prefer a button-lock to a friction lock. And definitely get training. Sometimes you might need to go an more indirect route for training, like take classes in another stick-fighting art such as escrima or kali.

I have carried one (ASP) for about a year or two, but in the end discarded it as pretty much useless - always felt it was a bit too dramatic a response considering the situations I had to face. Kubota worked better for me. Got the basic training for baton in the military. Deployed it once, but (luckily) did not have to use it. It is a powerful deterrent when opened.

I would never even consider carrying one day-to-day, because of the inconvenience caused by weight and size of the baton, and more importantly, the unwanted attention it gets when accidentally seen.

As said before buy a good quality baton.

Hitting solid wood with any CB is not a good idea. The best practice media I have found for working out with Kali baton techniques is a good 150+ pound heavy bag. But be ready with a few good rolls of duct tape because the bags don't seem to last long. The canvas bags do seem to withstand it a bit better than the sim/leather ones do.

Surprisingly enough, the "Bob" punching dummy seems to stand up to a good beating too. But for those who can't afford to replace bags as often, or don't want to worry about damaging their baton, I suggest some ratan sticks of the appropriate length of your baton to practice with. They can be rough on the bags too, but not as bad as the batons usually and they're super cheap to get and/or replace.

For those of you who don't want to buy/hit a punching bag at all for stickwork, a 4x4 post with two bags of concrete holding it up and old tires placed over it. Really, no joke, it's wonderful, and if acquired right, you only pay for the concrete. If you manage to wear those tires thin i'd be surprised, and tire shops will give you tires they would have disposed of anyways for free.

Any situation that would conceivably warrant hitting somebody with a club is EXACTLY the sort of situation where you should be expending 110% of your efforts to extricate yourself from the situation.

If you are not an LEO, who is there because he is required to be there, and you hit somebody with that club, I can almost guarantee you will be going to jail. Mark my words.

I was a cop in Texas from 97-06 and carried ASP 26" or 21" for all. If you are not a LEO I don't see a reason for carrying a baton. I'm 6-03 230 and used them several times on non druggies and druggies and they were not effective at all. If you are not hitting in the head then they are not effective. If you are hitting in the head then deadly force better be justified or you are going to prison. If deadly force is justified then you should be shooting not hitting. In TX just being caught carrying a baton on your person or in your vehicle will get you arrested so check your state's laws before doing so.

That's the same argument that the anti's love to use. As far as not being effective, you must have no clue whatsoever in the use of sticks sir. I personally can and have taken many people down with the PROPER use of a CB and find it very effective in NON lethal use. With the correct usage a CB strike will take an assailant of pretty much any size down without a head strike. Just because you are of a decent size does not give you any advantage at all in the use of a CB. My Kali master was all of a whopping 5'2" and MAY have weighed in at a huge 145 and I would bet you any amount of money you would choose to lay out he would have you on the ground crying for your mother within 10 seconds.

I think for American LEOs the training for the baton is less that optimal, probably because there is so much emphasis on firearms. Those of us in either security professions or just private citizens who do not have the luxury of firearm carry (due to policy or local law) must choose other options and work with what we can get. And I can confirm what Freedom_fighter's says as I too have taken down people larger than me with both batons and walking sticks.

Remember, LEOs want to take the attacker down and put them in cuffs. In SD you just want to stop the attack long enough to get away.
