I’m looking into getting additional insurance to protect my firearms from theft, as my homeowners insurance only covers firearms losses up to $1000. I considered adding a rider to my homeowners insurance and while the amount charged was only about $8 per $1000 of coverage, they do require an appraisal of the firearms by a third party before they will offer the policy to me. Therefore I started looking around, and have found both the NRA's ArmsCare program and Collectibles Insurance Services.

I’ve generally read good things about Collectibles Insurance (http://www.collectinsure.com/) and their rates are much better than the NRA’s ArmsCare insurance policy. I’ve read generally good things about both of them but I didn’t know if anyone on THR had experiences with them. I’m especially interested in how they handle a claim, since that’s where the proverbial “rubber meets the road.” Anybody have any experiences with them?

I have the NRA ArmsCare and I have no complaints, although I have yet to make any claim and hopefully won't have to. In looking at the Collectables Insurance webpage I notice down at the bottom it is worded as such that if you are insuring firearms you will need to submit a list or schedule.

No schedule/list required unless you have individual items worth $5,000+, individual stamps worth $25,000+ or firearms for gun collections.

That is from the Collectables Insurance website.

I will add that ArmsCare ask for a list "per item" of any firearm over $1400 in value.

I don't know about your inquiry, but I do know that Safeco provides unlimited gun coverage on their homeowner policies.

You might consider better homeowner's insurance

There are two companies, maybe a third, that offer the best homeowner's/liability insurance and will also issue "Valuable Articles" policies. They are Fireman's Fund and Chubb. They're generally upscale oriented but if your home meets their minimum value, you'll get the best coverage on everything, including your scheduled guns. They don't usually require an appraisal of your valuables because they'll send an appraiser to your home. He'll help determine the value of your home but they'll take your word for it on the value of the guns, jewelry, art, etc...whatever you decide to schedule. It may or may not be more expensive than what you're currently paying, depends on numerous factors.

I've noticed that too, and I'm rather leery of allowing a third party access to a list of my firearms even if they don't require serial numbers. Now, I'm not tin-foil hat type, but I think there are issues that arise from a list like this.

There is the possibility of a governmental agency requesting the info from the insurer due to some future registration/confiscation scheme, or even something less insidious such as county commissioners coming up with ridiculous zoning ordinances (i.e. no "Assault Weapon" zone, no "Arsenal" zone).

The possibility of a future divorce (I'm committed but unmarried) using the list to divide my property up.

The possibility that in some civil case I am sued for all my assets, and the plaintiff comes after my guns after his attorney discovers that I carry supplemental insurance.

My question is that, does anyone know if there are any instances where a list of firearms that has been kept with an insurance company has ended up being used against the person paying for the insurance?

Don't put down the guns buried in the sealed 'rocket launchers' buried in that secret place only you and the Idelprov-II satellite know about.

I have a rider on my homeowners (Grange). I had Selective until recently, and had a rider with them also. Can't tell you the rate right now, but the overall cost of Grange is less and coverage is WAY better in my case.

I have the SN's listed with the agent in case of theft. No appraisal, though I suppose if you tried to get way more than market value they'd have questions.

I've had 100% positive experiences with Collectibles, but have had no claims and hope to have none. Their rates are very good. One caveat: they insure "collections," not everyday use guns, so keep that in mind and only add your "extra" guns on their policy. You are allowed to use the insured items on occasion, just not on an everyday, regular basis.

My home owners covers my stuff they did/do not require any information until something happens. Then I only need to provide a receipt for purchased guns or a letter of enheritence for those that apply. In the event of fire flood ect I need only provide a picture. They have taken my word on what the value is. There was no "special" policy they were like everything else covered under the same thing.

I should add that only 2 are in the "collectable" catagory
