Was admiring 44 dave’s pics of the old Colt Army, and have to admit I’ve never cared much for the streamlined Colts (outside of the Police model), but never noticed the cutout on the left hand side in the recoil shield. The way it is cut seems peculiar but does line up with the nipple. However the much larger cutout on the right hand side is certainly there for installing caps. So what is the cutout on the other side for?

That is the cut out for a stock although this is a 3 screw, civilian and would need a long replacement hammer screw to attach it.
Note there is a like cutout on the bottom of the right side but it is in shadow below the cutout for capping.

It is fairly common to see originals that were cut for the stock but never drilled and tapped for the stock screws. The stock was not a popular item and Colt could save a few cents by omitting unnecessary machine operations. If a buyer wanted one with the stock they would take one off the shelf, or if necessary drill and tap one for him.

Sometimes the threaded holes are plugged with short screws that serve no other purpose.

Most modern repros seem to be cut for the stock, altho' few people ever fit one.

Uberti does make a "civilian" 1860 with brass TG an bs without the stock cut out , screws, or grip heel attachment point. They may be difficult to find . I believe I got mine from EMF.
