I am looking at purchasing a Colt 1911 in 38 Super caliber. Just wondering if anyone has any feedback on this particular pistol. How about the performance of the 38 Super caliber?
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you all in advance for your help.

I've got a Bright SS Colt 38 Super I like very well. Super is a fine cartridge, an excellent performer, especially for reloaders.

There is one other thread going on now in this forum on the Super and there have been a good number in the past. Search can help you here.

The gun you are looking at is a good one and can be upgraded to suit your needs as time goes by.

Here is a bit more info on the Super...

I encourage you to do a bit of reading on these sites as the information is good and useful.

If you handload the Super is a very useful and fun round.

Performance of the .38 Super runs from about like 9mm P with a little heavier bullet, to right up in there with .357 Sig. Its big advantage is that it is the correct OAL for the 1911 action and is usually reliable in function whereas a 9mm 1911 can be finicky as to ammunition and magazines.

Its main disadvantage is that because there are not a lot of guns the ammunition is not well distributed. If you are a handloader and don't mind stooping to recover your brass or if you have a large ammo budget and mailorder connections, that doesn't matter, but if you are a Cheapmart shopper, you will not shoot much.

I have a Colt in .38 Super and it's a great shooting gun, very accurate and reliable. Of course, what Jim Watson says about the .38 Super is true. You can find ammo on line pretty easy but it's not cheap to shoot, range ammo is in the same price range as .45acp.

Out of curiosity, if you don't know anything about the gun or cartridge why would you consider buying it?

WC145, I am interested in picking up a Colt 1911 38 Super for my collection. I have been collecting both Long Guns and Handguns-both pistol and revolvers for the last 15yrs. I have new guns that have never been shot. The reason I am collecting these guns is to pass on to my 2 grandsons.
I have read some articles on the 38 Super and found this to be an interesting round.
