I'm looking at purchasing a Colt 22 Carbine. My understanding is these mock AR15's come in 22 long rifle only. Here is my question. Can this rifle be re-chambered for 22 mag?. I'm assuming "all" that needs to be done is bore the breach for the cartridge.

What about the larger case head? Will the LR breechface accept it?
What about the magazine? Will they accept longer and wider wmr rounds without mod?

The wmr is a higher pressure round and could beat the blow-back action up pretty good.

You would need a custom magazine, the bolt may not have enough travel or spring force. Also .22lr is a heeled lead bullet with a .221 diameter, .22 mag is a copper jacketed bullet with a .224 diameter. Not saying no one has ever converted LR to Mag just not very nice to the gun.

Blowback operated? I think the bolt would probably blow back right out of the receiver. :uhoh: IIRC, when Ruger made the 10/22 for the magnum cartridge, they made the bolt largely or wholly from tungsten. You would likely have to do something like that to get it to function properly.

In simple terms?

NO.

The bore is undersize.
The bolt is too light.
The breechface is too small.
And the magazine is too short.

Not really feasible. Some enterprising folks have converted .22LR 10/22's into .22Mag's but that is A LOT of work and not for the uninitiated. They also have the benefit of factory .22Mag magazines. This conversion would not. If you want a .22Mag autoloader, buy one. That said, I would love to see a factory .22Mag AR-15 with 30rd magazines.

Actually peak pressure is almost identical. It's the curve that presents problems for autoloaders.
