Hello,
I bought a used Colt Dragoon online a while back and it was in kinda rough shape. I got it cleaned up and more or less functioning, but when cocked the cylinder goes past proper alignment and doesn’t lock up in battery. I was wondering if a new bolt and/or hand assembly might fix the problem. I would appreciate any input if any of you have had similar issues. Thanks

Does it go past the chamber when cocked slow or fast? If slow the bolt is dropping way late, if cocked fast it's throwing by, most likely a weak hand spring. Welcome to the forum! One more question, does the cylinder actually lock up?

Thanks for replying to my question, and your words of welcome.
The cylinder will index properly if cocked very slow. The cylinder does lock, but not very securely. You can manually turn the cylinder even when it should be locked.

The hand assembly and the bolt/trigger spring appear to be ok on visual inspection, but the bolt looks kinda beat up and “sprung”. I’ve got a new one ordered from Numrich Arms, so will let you know if that works. The oval cylinder stops on the 1st model maybe don’t function as well.

Interested to see how this turns out. I have 3 old 1960s/70s era colt replicas (Walker, Paterson, 3rd mod. Dragoon) that are all out of time and with various problems I'm too dumb to fix.

The oval cylinder stops should work just fine, I think it's a matter of how the bolt was fitted in the factory. If the holes in the cylinder are peened that could be part of the problems as well. 1KPerDay if you want your stuff fixed PM me and we can talk about it in depth.

Update on the Dragoon problem. It appears that the bolt surface was beat up and was too short to fully engage and lock the cylinder, allowing it to travel past chamber. It did protrude far enough to score the cylinder badly, unfortunately this was done before I acquired the piece. A new bolt seems to have solved the issue, though I’ve got a little more hand fitting to do for smooth operation.
