Colt 6720 vs 6920 as only AR

So I have an AK, a Garand, a couple Mosins, a few handguns but have yet to own an AR. I shoot for recreation and CCW for protection but because I have a 3 yr old, I work a lot of hours, and the cost of ammo, I am hardly an avid shooter and actually shoot much less than I would like to.

All that said, with the cost of ARs dropping like they have I am thinking about trying to pick one up after the holidays. I will probably own only one for the foreseeable future so I want quality, it will be for recreation and of course any potential SHTF scenarios. I don't plan on adding much except perhaps a light, and maybe a red dot down the road.

I know the 6920 is a popular choice for many reasons and there are some attractive prices on these now. I've read a lot of guys who enjoy the lightweight setups and pencil barrels and the 6720 fits that setup. I was just wondering if any of you have personal experience or opinions about having a lightweight pencil barrel as my only AR? I know the concerns with these are long term durability but it seems that we're talking 10's of thousands of rounds before that becomes an issue and I'm sure I would not reach that for many years with my current shooting routine. Anyway, I would appreciate your thoughts and opinions.
 
I'd stay away from a pencil barrel,mostly because.the barrel will bend if you get it hot. Enough,& theirs a possibility of the barrel bending if dropped or stepped on. I own a 6920 $ a 6721 no problems at all. Also own a Daniel defense m4 which. Is my favorite...

You should probably refrain from posting in this thread anymore, for the sake of not spreading more non-sense. If pencil barrels were that bad do you think your beloved Daniel Defense, a tier 1 AR manufacturer, would make them?

If it were me I would happily take the pencil barrel over the Gov't profile barrel of the 6920.
 
I was looking at the 6920 at first, until I found the Spikes Tactical st-15 mid-length. AIM Surplus has them for $799 with free shipping. You wont be disappointed, Im not. By the way Im will be running a Aimpoint Pro and tactical light as well. Good Luck
 
Go with the 6720. I have a pencil barrel on my DD and have had no problems with it. If you bend or break a barrel made out of 4150 steel as a civilian not in a warzone you did something you definitely shouldn't have been doing. Mine has hit the ground doing different drills more times than I can count.
 
Between the 6520 and the 6720, go for the 6720. I have a 6520 and while it's a great gun, the 6720's flat top upper facilitates mounting an optic without having to use a scout mount for co-witness or carry handle mount.

And pencil barrel AR15s are GREAT. You're not going to be doing full auto mag dumps and the light barrel allows you to have a nice, light, very handy little carbine. The only time you'd bend a pencil barrel would be if (a) you're using a shooting sling, in which it will affect POI but not permanently bend the tube, or (b) you use it as a pry bar, in which case that's outright abuse.
 
Thanks for the replies. I think I'm leaning towards the lighter 6720. Is the sling/POI an issue if the rail is free-float?
 
I have owned an early Colt SP-1 carbine since 1970.

You couldn't ask for a lighter or handier little AR-15.

Go with the 6720 and don't regret it later.

A Colt 6720 will make for a sweet, only 1, AR. Add a dot, light and sling and you are GTG. For a really rugged budget RDS with insane battery life, check out the Primary Arms MD-ADS (with the much better American Defense mount as an add-on). For Aimpoint quality, the PRO is a great value and the micro H1 is a great micro sight.

I have a pencil barrel DD 14.5" upper and have banged steel at 500yds with it. I wouldn't know about bending the barrel due to heat as I don't have a FA lower and haven't done 10 mag dumps back to back. I also haven't dug a foxhole with it...

As far as I remember, it was using them as a prybar to bust the metal straps off of cases of chow and ammo that bent barrels..... slip the old prong-type flash hider over the band, and pry.

I would just like to point out that a 16" M4 style barrel weighs 2.2 lbs, vs 1.9 lbs for a "superlight" pencil barrel.

To keep that in perspective, a 14.5" M4 barrel with a permanently attached FH weighs 2 lbs

Also, you will notice greater group dispersion in moderately higher rate of fire shooting with the lighter barrel.
 
Had a couple drinks last night and decided I couldn't wait till after the holidays ;). Bought a 6720 from PSA for $799. I already have about 5-6 PMAGs sitting in plastic at home. Now I have to get some ammo and will probably pick up a 2 point sling, maybe the VCAS, and then get some range time. Thanks again for the advice and info.
 
Sweet! Every time you order an accessory, add a magazine or 2, in no time you'll have 10-20 mags at low prices so when the next panic comes...who cares?

The 6720 weighs 0.7 pounds less than a 6920 in same configuration. If the barrel only accounts for 0.3 of that, where is the rest of the difference?
