I was just wondering if the firing pin tunnel was in the same location for the 10mm, 38 Super, etc that are non-45 caliber. I noticed when examining the brass from my 10mm that the primer-strikes looked significantly off-center. Is this supposed to be that way? I know many guns have off-center strikes, but these looked a bit excessive. Again, I have to find my tripod to take good pictures of the indentations.

The firing pin strike should be in the center part of the primer. Many times it will not be dead center, but it should not be near the edge either.

Off Center Hits

Howdy badger,

It could be the firing pin tunnel, but it's likely a matter of barrel fit in the slide...either up too far or not up far enough in vertical lock. Just to eliminate one possibility, check to see if the barrel is locking on the link or on the bottom of the lug. If it's on the link, this will sometimes set the barrel higher in the slide, depending on lug dimensions. If the link isn't bearing the load of lockup, put the gun into battery briskly and push down on the hood to see if it moves downward. Most factory pistols will move a tiny bit, but ideally, the barrel should lock up solidly on the crosspin.

If it is locking on the link, a shorter link may solve the problem, but will
also loosen the vertical lockup. If the front radius of the lower lug is
out of spec, it can also cause a bind with the slidestop pin as the barrel
links up. A shorter link can also cause the barrel to stop on the link instead of on the impact surface in the frame. There's a check for that too...but I'll
wait until you get more information.
