Snagged this from CDNN some years ago, without really understanding its provenance.
I like iron sights, and this carbine offers a rifle length sight radius, and rifle handguards. Which means the sights are pushed out almost to the flashider on the 16" heavy barrel ,1:9 twist.
Got it for its 'dissipator' look.
Everything is A2; sights, fixed buttstock, pistol grip.
The rest of the story; Colt made a run of these for CHPs, to fit the shotgun racks in their cruisers.
They were sold off when the Cali cops moved on to other things, and there will be no more.
Mine has some handling nicks, but is otherwise in great shape.
Anyway, I might want to part with it. Any educated guess on what it might be worth?
Thanks in advance.

I am certainly no expert, not even a clue really, but pictures are always helpful in determining a price.

Plus you know we just enjoy looking...

They just discussed those recently over on AR15.com and the consensus was that they are neat rifles that shoot really good and look cool but they don't hold any special value. They did find some crazy prices for a couple of them on GB but that was during the pandemic panic buying frenzy.

You definitely have a great rifle with some unique history related to its design.

I would take a look over on GB to see if any are currently listed.

ETA: They were discussing uppers, not complete rifles. That might change things.

It’s a neat history, but I don’t know if it’s worth any extra money. Roll marks are cool to look at when we’re not shooting, not good for much else. I personally don’t like government marked things, but I don’t like too many of the Meme lower receivers either.

An older Colt A2 Dissy in good shape ~$800 for someone looking for a Colt.

It’s a lot like the commemorative Henrys and 10/22s. It doesn’t mean a whole lot unless you’re a Freemason, or Eagle Scout, or won the Ducks Unlimited raffle.

But, there is someone in this 350million human country that is looking for a California Highway Patrol AR, and be willing to pay a premium for it at auction.
The trick is they have to see it or it will go for a commodity used AR price.

Points all, gang. Plainly, it's worth what it's worth, as is always the case.
As regards pictures, dammit, I've never had any luck at all doing that. I'm a technodunce, but my bride is good at such things, and she's been flummoxed. Any tips?
And it is a great rifle; the 1:9 is actually better than 1:7, unless you're planning on shooting tracers in cold weather... ;)
May not actually part with it. Did pick up the Brownells M16 16" upper, which scratched the Dissy itch without the weight of the heavy barrel.
We'll see.
Thanks,
Moon

I love the Dissipator look and recently built one off a PSA upper. I agree that 1/9 works better for about 95% of the shooting I do.

You have a cool rifle and if it were me, I would keep it.

Here is a picture of one in the wild...

Thnx, ECVMatt. Great pic. Have to tell you, I do take pleasure in wondering if Nancy Pelosi knows I have one. Frankly, I'm surprised that Cali permitted them to be sold at all.
Yeah, parting with it isn't a sure thing.
It was potentially going as a trade, but now it won't, unless for really good money.
Mine is currently fit with an A1 stock (fits me better), an XS front sight (I can see it...), and a Geissele SSA, but it would be no trick to take it all back to stock.
Thanks guys,
Moon

Living in CA currently, and I want one just for that reason! I love the fact the that the CHP provided relatively cheap (At the time), but high quality AR's to the general public!

The way you have it set up would be just about the perfect rifle for me. The A1 stock is the perfect length and I like fixed stocks over colapsables, the SSA trigger is a dream to shoot with, and I am good with the factory sights..you got a great one.

I tried to duplicate that rifle the CHP rifle with what i had in the garage at the time and came up with this:

It has an A2 stock, but otherwise just about right. I gave it a 50 yard zero and called it good. The fin will get thrown in the Colorado River when I leave CA.

I also took a little inspiration from this guy:

Once in a free state, I will be on the hunt for one of those CHP Dissipators just because!

Enjoy that rifle!
