For years now I have read some heated discussions on various forums among AR 15 pattern rifle collectors as to whether or not Colt made a "dissipator" rifle. They were never seen on the open market, not surprising since they were made during the Clinton gun ban era. The mystery was revived weeks ago when CDNN began running an ad selling police surplus Colt Dissipator AR-15 rifles. Some of those who denied the existence dug in their heels and claimed they must be Colt lowers with someone else's upper on them but detailed photos showed they were wrong. It seems the Big Foot, Loch Ness Monster of ARs actually does exist. The receivers and uppers had Colt markings as did the barrels. One intrepid poster on AR15.com settled the issue by calling Colt directly.

I called Colt to inquire about an Archives search for the gun. Luckily, I got the best Colt rep that I've ever spoken with. He said "how about I save you the trouble and look it up?". Sweet!

Anyway when I gave him the serial number this is what he found:

The "Dissipator" is a Colt Model AR6536 (can't even find that on a Google search).

2003 mfg, 16.1" H BAR, ,1:9, chrome lined, A2 Upper, Fixed buttstock, A2 front and rear sights, rifle handguards, bayo lug, muzzle break.

He could not tell me how many were produced.

CDNN had around 40 of these rifles from what I gathered and the price was quite reasonable ($1299) so I ordered one. It arrived last week, so I picked it up at my FFL on my way home from the Tea Party protest against the IRS rally in Cincinnati. It shows signs of use but is in good shape overall, I am pleased. The gun came with a total of four C Product 30 round magazines. Interestingly enough this was shipped in a Sig Sauer rifle box, so it would be reasonable to guess the police department that had these ordered Sig Sauer rifles. These are rare and in my view are an excellent investment for the gun collector. Late last week CDNN sweetened the pot and offered ten extra mags with them. So I have another on order, hopefully it will be in by Thursday.

Very cool, thanks for the report and pics. I was curious about these. I assume it has the rifle gas system? Have you shot it yet? Does it work?

It has a carbine mid length gas tube. I bought this as more of a collectors item, I have a number of other Colts I shoot.
