Colt Detective Special Serial # Identification

Hello All.

I need a little help Idenitfying a Detective Special. The serial number is P145XX. I've looked at proofhouse, but it's not listed through 1978.

I have a feeling it might be one of the newer detective special made, it has aan older box with it and walnut wraparounds on it, so I'm a little confused.

Thanks, and yeah, in the short time I've been on some of these forums Dfariswheel has correctly, and concisely, answered numerous questions I've had.
In fact I've been so impressed with his knowledge that unitl you just used the term, "friend", I was begining to have a sneaking suspicion that "Dfariswheel" was some kind prompt to interface with some kind of Colt megacomputer, or answer-machine of sorts.

The "P" series was new that year.
The "P series numbers started at P01001, and ended at P36849 by year's end.

I wonder If you'd accept a bit (no pun intended) more data?

I just brought home my very first Colt and was wondering about the DOM. It's a nickel Mustang with #MU546XX.

The numbers for the Colt Mustang are not publicly available.
The available Colt serials numbers end in 1985, before the Mustang was made.

To get a production date, call Colt during normal business hours.
They'll give you a date over the phone, but NO other info about your specific gun.

They may, but more often then not to get additional information will require buying an expensive "historical letter." Since they discovered that bucks are to be made, Colt has not released very much information for public distribution.

Maybe Cindy is stretching the rules a bit for a regular customer. Perhaps there is nothing wrong with this, but I agree with dfariswheel that “extra isn’t usual.” In they’re present financial situation they’ll exploit any resource they can. Colt’s historical letter charges are about three times those of Smith & Wesson, and S&W contributes half of what they get to the U.S. Shooting Team. In fact, I believe Colt’s have the highest charges in the industry for historical information.
