Can anyone tell me where to get a resource that would list the serial numbers for Colt Detective Special and the year of manufacturing?

Thanks

Proofhouse.com has all available Colt serial numbers up to 1978.

Numbers up to 1985 are available in the book "Colt: An American Legend" by RL Wilson.
Or you can post the serial number here with the last two numbers as "X"'s .
(123XX)

Serial numbers

I have always wondered about this, why all the concern over serial numbers ?
Revolver identity theft?
I truly don't get it, what would someone do with my revolvers serial number if I displayed it?

Probably nothing, but you never know for sure. I wouldn't post my complete Social Security Number for the same reason.

The usual purpose for posting a number is to determine the year (give or take) when a particular firearm was made. To accomplish this a full number isn't necessary. Something like 234,0xx will do. Why take unnecessary risk, even if it's small?

Thanks again for the colt info. What about Smith & Wesson serial #s. I can't find a damn thing using google anymore.

TimM:

So far as I know there is no on-line database for Smith & Wesson. Partly that's because their method of assigning numbers was, and still is a convoluted mess. You can call the factory and they can usually tell you the year; or you can buy a copy of Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson - 3rd. Edition, by Jim Supica & Richard Nahas. The book will put you in the ballpark, and provide a lot of useful information to boot. My copy has paid for itself several times over.

Last but not least you can post a model and serial number on The High Road, and somebody will usually look it up.

I have never seen Smith & Wesson serial numbers listed on a web site. If one exists, you will find links in the Smith & Wesson forum. Serial number info comes from either S&W directly or the book Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas. The 3rd edition is out now of that book.

Added: Beat me to it. Oh well.
