Was there any vintage of Detective Special that was known for particularly good trigger pull? Also, would any/all of the various grip designs over the years work in small hands? Thanks

The pre-WWII guns had nice triggers, but most Colt DS's have good triggers. The problem is, the Colt trigger is DIFFERENT than any other brand of revolver.

Many people try a Colt trigger, and having only used S&W, Taurus, or Ruger guns the Colt doesn't feel "right".
Colt's "stack" near the end of the pull, and some people just don't like the feel.

The DS has a good trigger, and some careful tuning can make it a great trigger.

As for grips, the original DS as made from the 20's through about the 1950's had a full steel grip frame. The grips were just flat slabs. Starting sometime in the later 50's Colt changed the frame to a short "stub" type grip. This frame can be fitted with a very wide range of grips.
Many people like the Pachmayer round butt grip that Colt used on most of the late 1990's production guns.

As for as "shootability", probably the best DS's are the post-1972 models with the heavy, shrouded barrel. The extra weight up front gives a very nice feel, and the short frame can be fitted with a grip to suit even the smallest hand.

Old Colt Grips

I have a small supply of Colt Agent, Diamond Back, Viper, Detective Special, Police Positive and Police Positive Special Pistol Grips.

I need a tracing of your bare frame on paper showing all holes and pins to be mailed to me to see if any of my Fitz oversize Cherry Wood or Walnut grips will fit your weapon.

The weapons were designed to be carried under cover and the grips were so small that Officers could not hold them well enough to qualify in their monthly 25 yard shoots.

So my Uncle Barney made over size grips for them and everyone was happy at they fit so so well the Fitz company was born in 1924 and I closed it in 1979 but have a few grips left for good homes.
