I've always thougth that simultaneous posession of M-16 components and AR-15 rifles is illegal according to BATF. (Unless the AR is a registered MG, of course)

Recently, I've seen a bunch of Colt LE6920 rifles which came from Colt with M-16 bolt/bolt carrier components.

Was there a change in how BATF interprets the law or did Colt mistakenly install these parts in a batch of rifles?

The bolt / bolt carrier of the M-16 are not the components which BATFE consider to be "machinegun parts". They are primarily concerned with the trigger, hammer, disconnector, and selector switches.

M16 bolt carriers are OK as long as they do not allow the rifle to fire more than one shot per pull of the trigger.

About all you gain from it though is a shrouded firing pin and a tiny delay in dwell time. Having the shrouded firing pin is nice; but the delay in dwell time is pretty insignificant in semi use.

To test legality, pull trigger one time and hold.

If trigger goes Bang, you can enjoy your AR as long as you want.

If trigger goes Bang Bang Bang, you can enjoy AR until the police arrive.
