This is for all you poodleshooter buffs out there. I'm a diehard battlerifle guy, and i've never really been crazy about them little ol' .223 pieces, though they are pretty cool, i'd rather have a FAL or CETME kinda gun. A police officer buddy of mine just offered to sell me his AR type rifle, and i wanted to see if anyone could tell me if its a decent buy for the kind of gun it is. the thing just ooozes cool, but the price is steep, so i'm double checking .

the gun is a colt m-4, mark Law enoforcement only, has a step cut bbl for some kinda of launcher, regular old iron sights (he said they were a-2 style??) and the thing has been hardly fired. its seen maybe 2 mags of ammo since he bought it new through the department earlier this year. whats the value of a piece like this? if its halfway decent and i don't get it myself, i'll have him join THR and post it here. thanks in advance!

Well the LEO-only thing doesn't matter anymore (AWB died).

The step cut barrel is for an M203 grenade launcher or 37mm flare launcher.

If it's got shorter than a 16" barrel, it's an NFA weapon (class III short barreled rifle) which requires a stamp and background check.

If it's a Colt M-4gery, basically unfired, with A2 sights, and a collapsing stock? $700-800 is about what they run new. I'd prefer the A3 flat top reciever, but the A2 is okay. (Carrying handle permanently attached with sights model).

well, he wants about 900$ for it, maybe a bit less if i get it (buddy discount). Thats what i was curious about. doesnt matter at this point, because a damned deer managed to crash into me last night and the car just took priority and my rifle moneys :(

This sounds like a Colt LE 6920 (16" barrel w/ M4 cut. 1/7 twist, M4 feed ramps). $900 sounds pretty reasonable price-they are going for $1295 and up in the post AW sunset frenzy. Whether they will stay so high depends on politics and Colt's sales policy, but $900 still sounds fairly reasonable for a Colt.

$900 is a fair price. As always, try to go lower, but you wouldn't get screwed if you had to pay the full asking price.

Checking out gunbroker.com might give you a decent idea on the going rate, or if you're so inclined it would tell you what you could get for it by purchasing at a discount and selling it if it turns out money's too tight.

If it is a LE6920 I'd jump on it for $900. (obviously less if possible) Granted that's what they sold for new to the Police crowd prior to September, but these days unless you want to pay $1100-$1300 in advance to get on a waiting list to wait literally for MONTHS to get one. They are selling EASILY for $1500 - $1750 range on AR15.com, and have seen some CRAZIES pay over $2000 for one on gunbroker.net, and gunsamerica.com. Colt has made their public statement they will cancel the Colt Distributorship of any dealers found to be selling these LEO rifles to us mere civilians. I bought one NIB in Sept. and WAS going to shoot the hell out of it until I saw all the commotion about them. It's staying in the box all sealed up tight and waiting to see what happens in a few months. ESPECIALLY if Kerry is elected, as I believe he will bring back an AWB much worse than before. I might even buy another if I can stumble across a deal.

I have the same rifle but without the LE markings  and I paid $1100 for mine before the sunset. I'd say $900 is probably a square deal but probably not a huge bargain.
