Just purchased one so I don't know if this has been covered with any specificity as to manufacturer, but can the Colt Mark IV Light Weight Commander feed reliably HP ammo and if so what is the recommended one that you guys have seen work best? Do I need to polish the ramp? The ammo will be off the shelf not reloads.

I have a S&W 645 and that eats everything I put in it.

Thanks in advance.

It should. I have the all steel Commander MK IV, Series 80 and I just shot FMJSWC (yes semi-wadcutter) target ammo and it fed and extracted perfectly. My Commander was made in the 80s. I have also the newest Commander, made in 2012, with the little mini-ramp in the throat, and it feeds anything to.

My concern was that the ramp is not attached to the barrel like in my 645.

Lone Ranger, I had some Commanders, earlier than yours, that fed hollow points just fine so I would expect yours would too. You won't know till you test. A factory load that seems to feed in about any pistol that will reliably feed ball, is the Remington 185 grain -R45AP2- JHP. Not a high-tec bullet, but very reliable in feeding. I have used a bunch of it in Colts, SIGs, S&Ws, etc. Never any issues in feeding.

I would sure not recommend polishing the feed ramp in your aluminum framed pistol. If you do, you will remove the hard anodized frame ramp surface, requiring expensive repair. Then you may end up with a ramped barrel like your 645 has, whether you want it or not, after you pay a gunsmith to machine the frame and fit the new ramped barrel... Not Cheap!

With good mags, I'd expect it to feed just about anything you put into it.

Of course, as others have noted, you can't be sure until you try.
