About a year and three months ago I ordered a Colt new frontier. The fit and finish on the gun is great. It is well polished and has nice deep blue. The case Harding is pretty and even, has a yellow background with blues, greens, reds and orange color all over. It is tight and just real nice, except the grips. I knew the grips on a New Frontier would be nothing to write home about. I was expecting them to be dull walnut and fitted well to the frame. What I got is some sort of burl walnut that looks like it was finished sanded with maybe 180 grit sandpaper. The right grip is well fitted but the left grip is fitted well except at the bottom where it meets the frame. It is rounded off at the bottom and about a1/4” of the frame is expose. I have looked on gunbroker at some of the listings and I see others that are just as bad and worse in some. Colt customer service sad they are going to send out a new set, I know they will need to be fitted. I have always wanted a Colt New Frontier since I was a kid. I love the gun, I just can’t get past the grips. They kinda make the whole gun trashy and look cheep. I have posted a picture that shows the left grip and area I am talking about. I have seriously considered sending the gun off to have a nice set of grips made and fitted to it. I am just not wild about sending it to a grip maker and it setting in their shop on a shelf for three to six months. Worried it could get threw around and get beat up or just sit and rust up. Not really crazy about shipping it, could get lost, damaged or stolen. I know to insure it but dealing with the shipper to get paid back, can take months if not years. I have considered Classic Single Action Grips in Arizona. His grips look good and are priced very reasonable. I would have to get on his waiting list. It would be five to six months, then h would let me know he was ready for my gun, then another six to eight weeks before he finished and shipped it back. Does anyone know of a good grip maker, that is reasonably priced and has a better turnaround time. I have bought Colt handguns my whole life, and never seen anything like this. You should be able to expect better coming out of the Colt custom shop. This just not what one expects from Colt. I have seen Rugers that this set of grips would be excellent compared to what they ship out but this is not a Ruger and not priced like on either.
