Looks to be a first generation. The SN will date it if you have that. The box is a nice addition but the revolver definitely looks to have some wear and patina on it. Off the cuff I'd say if the timing is good and function is 100% it's worth about $300 as a shooter. If the timing is off cut that in half.
There is some growing collector interest in these pre-war double actions, but it's pretty much limited to the minty ones.
OTOH if you have one with good timing it can be a VERY fun and classy, accurate shooter. They seem to prefer .38 Special 158 grain soft lead RN bullets, and the ones I've had were sighed in at 20 to 25 yards with that or a very comparable load. They don't tend to do as well with modern high-vel jacketed rounds.
I'd suggest shooting it bullseye style, old school, with a fedora. See?
I love the Colt PP and PPS. My mom has a PPS in .32-20.
I used to have a book that gave Colt Dates per serial numbers.
Have no clue what happened to it.
ISTR my mom's PPS was made in 1922?
pp is police positive, pps is police positive special
The police positive was the version made for the .38 S&W and some other lower-pressure rounds. The "special" was made for the high pressure (for that time) .38 Special and .32-20. They lengthened the chamber and may have made some other tweaks.
They are some classic revolvers. IIRC they are a "D" frame and are smaller than the Official Police line. They are remarkably light. A number of them were made into snub nose "Fitz" specials in the 20's and Colt took this as the basis of the detective special, which is mostly just a shortened PPS.
If timing is good $300 is a buy. Sell $450 with the box on Gunbroker, should fetch an easy $400. >38 special a plus too. I have one from 1925 with 6" barrel. I just sold a bunch of .32 Colts but kept that one.
