I have a 1978 Colt Series 70 MK IV Gov't 1911 .45 ACP pistol. Whenever I grab the gun (unloaded, of course) and shake it up and down or front to back, I hear a "clunking" sound, like things are moving around slightly in there. Is this normal? Is this model supposed to have a certain amount of looseness, that you should be able to hear it? I've owned the gun since it was about 1 year old. It always shot OK. I took very good care of it, and it looks in mint condition. I only recently started shooting it regularly. Last week I couldn't get to group well, but I found the front sight had come loose, but I have since fixed that. I haven't shot it since, though.
Anyone have any ideas?
John

It is not unusual for such a gun to rattle a bit. If it shoots reliably and accurately (with a firmly attached sight) there is nothing to worry about.

And a firmly attached plunger tube. And a firmly attached ejector.

Likely the sound is the slop between the barrel and bushing. If it bothers you a gunsmith can fit a tighter one for you but as Watson has already deduced it should otherwise be fine. Tolerances.

That sounds terrible, do not endanger your self, send it to me and I will even pay the freight. We have to get these malfunctioning pistols off the streets.

I've got a '70 series nickel Government Model that is a '76 gun. Rattles a little, shoots fine. It won't be replaced by a plastic gun, but, then, I've got one of those, also. Enjoy your '70 series.
