Are these real Colts? I have been told they were made under license from Colt and not by Colt. Is this so? How does their value stand up against second generation Colt blackpowder revolvers?
Thanks,
Geordie

3rd Generation 3rd Model Dragoon

I have a 3rd Model Dragoon with a brass backstrap with the Colt signature on it. The serial number is 35689, which I presume makes it 3rd Generation, yes? The file History of Colt Black Powder Reproductions does not list any 3rd Gen serial numbers.

my understanding is that they are Ubertis 100%
The finishing touches may be done here as is claimed, doubtful to me, but all the parts are imported.

That being said, an Uberti with a professional trigger job, etc., would exhibit the same qualities minus the colt stamps.

I could agree that they are colts if and only if the colt company made all the parts and manufactured the guns themselves. The colt "stamp" is aesthetic to me only.

If you wish to call them colts as if they are the real thing... more power to ya. It doesn't need to be a point of nasty contention. I just can't call them colts. Truthfully, I'm not sure it matters much other than the magical price put on them. I think the price differential is crap. From my point of view, it costs an extra 200 bucks (or more) plus for the "seal of approval", and not worth it.

The newer cimarrons have the old colt patent dates stamped on the frame.
If you put a "colt" stamped barrel on it would it then become a "colt"?
How would you know the difference?

That's pretty much what you have with colts made from Forgett's time until now.

I didn't say that I didn't have one.

and hey... if ya like it and yer having fun... well that's just fine with me, just don't start discussing "value" with me, please.

I have an old Uberti repop that has the "Colt" name on top of the barrel. There was a lawsuit filed and this practice was stopped.

They were sold by Colt then they are Colt no matter where they where made.

I have a Colt Signature Series 1861 .36 caliber Navy, a few Piettas and a few Ubertis. I'm willing to bet, and even willing to accept, that the Colt is an Uberti, but...it is a step or two above the other revolvers. I'm not a gunsmith, don't know much about metals, but this Signature Series is better looking, better made, better fitted. And anyone who handles it and fires it would probably agree. Is it more accurate? No. More dependable? Yep. For some reason that I can't explain it spits out spent caps and never, ever jams or misfires. I only paid $375 for it (used, unfired). Would I pay the current auction prices that I see for an Uberti with the Colt name on it?
No. I'd probably get a few Piettas.

Third generation Colts were made at the Iver Johnson factory in New Jersey, entirely from Uberti parts. F- Series 2nd Gen. Colts were also made there, out of Colt parts, except for barrels, cylinders, and backstraps, which were sourced from Uberti. C-Series 2nd gen. Colts were made at the Colt factory in Hartford, out of Colt parts, except for barrels, cylinders, and backstraps, sourced from Uberti. The only C-Series guns were '51 Navies and 3rd Dragoons. These models were continued in the F-Series, along with all the others models.

Gunsamerica has lots of Colts, 2nd and 3rd generation. In most cases, it seems that the 3rd gen. guns hold their value about as well as the 2nd gen. guns. Most are new in the box, with cylinders as yet unturned.

Thanks

Thanks to all.
I found an unfired but not unturned Walker Signature Series. I bought it, $310plus tax.
Thanks again,
Geordie

They were pricey enough to be Colts, that's for sure.

I know I cringed the day I put a crease/dent in my 'grey box' my 1851 Navy shipped in.

The sig. series are so much better finished/blued than any other BP revolver I've seen on the market. It's might not be an original, but you get more than a logo and a fancy box for your money.

I even bought the accessory kit in a seperate grey box.

Happy with the $ I spent.

I just saw some surplus Colt barrels go down on ebay.
I had this odd thought about WHICH repro they might fit.
I was thinking none of them.
If I am right, that would mean that the colt copies or recent years are not colts.
If I am wrong then the Uberti company would be the one that manufactures true to original specs, but they still wouldn't be Colts.

Back a few years, I had a Chevy with a Buick engine. It was still a Chevy.
If the guns were good enough for Colt to put their name on it, and Colt called them Colts, well, then, to me, it's a Colt.

Have three signature series and one second gen; can't tell the difference between 'em re: fit and finish. They may be Uberti parts, but that's as far as the resemblence goes. The quality of the guns (especially the bone case hardening) leaves any Uberti I've seen panting in jealousy. Definately worth the money when I bought them; very glad I have them now.

Parts for the Sig Series were imported from Uberti much the same as the 2nd generation Colts and finnished here. i.e no proof stamps omn them. Much the same as the 2nd Gens were only finnished in the Conn. factory that burned down...i.e. 3rd Gen. Colts could not mbe assy'd in Conn. factory. Colt allowed them to be assemled under the Colt name. They are Colts but 3rd generation...it's all in the sites posted. I'd take a 3rd gen Colt over any other replica Rev made...I have the 1st model Dragoon in the Sig series...love it couldn't have been built any better. High dollar resale on them too.
Geordie you hit the jackpot. Congrads.

Geordie.

You got a really good buy. A new Walker copy will cost you $349.95 at Cabela's. In 10 years yours will be worth at least double or more than you paid for it. In 10 years the copy will be worth 1\2 of what you paid. But then again I don't buy my guns to make money on, I buy them to shoot.
