To the THR Revolver brain trust:

What are the best combat revolver grips currently out there for a square butt S&W K frame in . 38 spl? Specifically for an openly carried revolver such as uniformed police or security work, or plain clothes (not under cover, just suits rather than uniforms) police/security work? Concealment is not a requirement. Firing will be done almost exclusively in DA mode. Reloading will be with speed loaders primarily.

I've used old school magna's and new school Hogues, with a midway stop with Pachmayr's. I've had my eye on Harretts for a while, or possibly Nils. However I know that in the revolvers heyday a whole lot of different companies produced a whole lot of different revolver grips. I'd prefer a one piece grip rather than using something like a a T-grip, but I'll give it a shot if it's the answer.

Thanks!

IMO:

For most people, the standard Magna grips with a Tyler T-Grip give the best grip for recoil control, and lowest profile possible for me.

But everyone's hand size is different.

So what works best for me may not work best for you.

Only way I know is too keep trying until you find what you prefer.

That's why over 50 years, I have a junk box full of grips I tried while looking for the best.

As already stated, that turned out for me to be stock S&W Magna with the Tyler T-Grip added.

Your milage may vary, because each persons hands are different.

But that wouldn't be a bad place to start for a good basis of comparison.

I've got a M19 with a beat up set of Magnas that I sanded down and heavily relieved and a T grip.

I did a particularly ugly job on the grips, but everyone agrees they feel good in the hand and you can't see how ugly they are then!

Guy in Thailand makes these. He makes them for S&Ws to.

Ebay has lots of them.

S&W Magna grips work pretty well just as they are, though I do use a Tyler T-Grip with the much smaller J frame grip. Other than that I have found Pachmayr Presentation grips to be a good fit as well for a S&W K frame with a square butt.

If you REALLY want a pair of combat grips that fits your hand and if your hand is large enough to benefit from them, there is nothing like a set of Ropers from Herrett's. If that is too much money then look to Ahrends and their tactical/target grips. First photo Herrett's and second Ahrends.

Hogue nylon is the best for me, yet mostly I get a wooden version on my guns, which is a little bulkier.

To those recommending the T-Grip, I think I know where I can borrow one and I'll try it out.

Deaf Smith: You wouldn't happen to know the Ebay name of the guy selling those? I like the look.

bannockburn: I tried Pac's and unfortunately they are too thin for my hands it seems. Which is odd because I have small hands for a guy.

stu1ritter: I've thought about a set of Jordan grips for a while now. Do they work as well as advertised? I have small hands for a guy, but I find that a Glock, Beretta 92, and even a USP in .45 feel great in my hands. A 1911 is actually a bit to thin for my taste without adding some decent width stocks too it. If Jordan grips just flat out require big hands, then I'm probably SOL, but if they can work for someone with a smaller hand they or something similar may be the ticket.

Jenrick;
I sent my hand tracing to Herrett and they told me my hand was too small for the Jordans. I just changed my post above to reflect the invoice instead of my olde poor memory. They recommended the Roper stock for my hand and they made them to fit. I love the feel. It's my first pair of fitted handgun grips and it won't be my last. Sorry about the initial misinformation.

Wood grips look nice and can serve you well. However, back in the 70s I found that if you are carrying that gun in other than a full flap holster those grips will look like crap quick. All my carry guns wear Pachmyrs , Hogues, Uncle Mikes, etc. I have worn out the Pachmyrs on my S&W 60. Synthetics take the beating an exposed gun takes.

My K-38 Combat Masterpiece wears cheap old Hogues, they fit me perfectly. I agree with other comments about the Pachs just not fitting right in my hand. rcmodel said it best, as usual, every individual's grip size/strength/balance/habits will determine how many grips you have to buy before you find the perfect ones. For you.

For me, it is rubber HOGUE'S. I will not use anything else if I can avoid it on a medium to large size combat revolver. The profile fits my hand exactly. The rubber helps soak up some of the recoil with heavy loads and they never slip or move around in your hand the way a wooden grips can.
I have spoken with others who prefer the PACHMARY Grippers which I found a little bit too large for my hands.

I stand 5'9", so take hand size into consideration.
I even have them on a K-frame snubby.

I like the PACHMAYR Presentation grips for .22 revolvers and target shooting as well, but not on a combat gun.

A long time ago, I was a pretty darn good handgun shot.

And I proved conclusively to myself I couldn't shoot as well with soft rubber grips as I could with hardwood, or hard nylon grips.

My 50 yard groups were about twice as large with soft rubber grips as they were with hard grips.

Food for thought, and do some testing before deciding which is best for you.

Soft might be better for close range hard kicking light gun combat shooting where precision accuracy is not important.

But it might be a deal breaker for longer range accuracy.
It was for me.

Ahrends or Herrett's stocks for me. I like the Ahrends Tactical grip on a 4" barrel and the Ahrends Retro or Herrett's Roper on anything longer.

If you want to see some really nice Roper and Kearsage reproduction grips, check out Keith Brown. I'd love to have a set, but haven't been able to afford them. http://www.kbgrips.com/

I also like stag magna sized grips, but they are a bit on the small size for me.

I prefer Hogue Monogrips. Ditto what Golden said in post #15 above. I never have liked wood grips. I carried the Model 15 a lot and didn't like them on it. For me, the Hogue Monogrip is also the champ on the Security Six and on N-Frames and on Redhawks.

That's strange as I have small hands as well and I like the way Pachmayrs feel because they are relatively flat and not as bulky as S&W target grips. Dan Wesson used to have a one piece grip (can't remember if it was called the Sacramento or the Gunfighter grip), that was nicely tapered from the top and had finger grooves. There was also a grip maker named Fuzzy Farrant who offered similar style grips for S&W K frames but to be really tapered at the bottom part of the frame had to be removed. Currently I have a Hogue Monogrip (with finger grooves), on one of my S&Ws and it's a good fit for my hand size.

More important than grip material (wood, rubber, whatever) is the way it fits your hand. A perfect fitting wood stock will have less felt recoil than an ill fitting rubber one.

For example, my hand and Hogue monogrips do NOT get along. Either the finger grooves or my fingers are in the wrong place :p ! Most Pachmayers work better for me, but they still aren't ideal.

In the end, felt recoil with my Ahrends is quite a bit less to my hand than just about anything else. I don't even mind the magnas on my 2.5" 66 firing 125 grain magnums (not that I feed my 66 many of those).

OTH, on a J frame I haven't found anything better than the factory rubber boot grips like those that came on my 642. Ugly, but functional for me. Although, even with my big hands, the tiny magnas on my 3" 36 work pretty well, and they look great too:
