I was looking around on the net and found several Youtube videos on how to make combustible cartridges C&B revolvers. I have made these for a vintage Sharps rifle I owned and have several original combustible pistol cartridges in my cartridge collection.(ie,Hazards 44 and a few other skin covered types) My question is this, does anyone make these here? and how is the accuracy compared to the basic loose component method?...Larry

I have made mine using cigarette papers. I saw no significant difference between them and loading loose powder.

There are a bunch of threads on rolling paper cartridges. Some are imbedded in various "clubs".

Try using the search function on club threads with "paper"

been rolling mine for years. they are more convenient to reload with, when you are in more of a hurry.
Accuracy? The same, you're using the same amount of powder, and basically compressing the same.

Your English if just fine Erwan. A few small errors but still very easy to read and comprehend your meaning. And MUCH easier than the "textspeak" I see all too often from younger posters... :D

And welcome to The High Road and the Blackpowder forum.

This winter, out of boredom, I made the tapered mandrels and rolled paper cartridges using cigarette papers.
They worked well, but left small bits of paper in the cylinder. I did load a second time with out getting it out, fired with out a problem.
I was thinking of using them for SASS shooting but would not trust the paper build up. I suppose nitrated paper or flash paper would be the answer.
For now an shooting my .44-40s.

The real things often used nitroglycerine-treated thin cotton paper and "waterglass". These completely burned upon firing, greatly reducing the risk of embers in the chamber and reducing overall fouling.

You can make your own in this same way, though it's more labor intensive than the cigarette paper method most use nowadays.

When making paper cartridges for my C&B revolvers I use paper (old phone book pages or tissue paper, the gift wrapping kind) that I nitrated and slightly watered down honey as a glue. When I first started I used cigarette papers but found them to be inadequate because they didn't ignite quick enough nor did they always burn completely so remnants ended up sticking to the walls of the cylinders.

I've used American Spirits paper and never noticed a slow ignition, but did often find small remnants of paper left behind. I eventually left them to see if they caused any issues, but only tried 3 cylinders. Though without incident, it's far from conclusive.

paper cartridges

I like them quicker to load, but do leave ash residue in chambers, no big deal though.

If you want a paper really without residues the best is this kind of paper (a bit like flash paper). It's a pretty good paper but I find that it's a little bit expensive for me, so I use for myself the same paper for my Remington 58 and Sharps 59 Pedersoli (kraft paper nitrated and the accuracy is almost the same)...
This spécial paper is really the best that you can find...

Best regards.

Erwan.

Thanks BCRider ;)

Edit: problem with the link....

Is there a US source for that paper? I don't do international orders or Euros.....
The H & C paper from France is really good, but if you want to get it domestically in the US you can search for "flash paper" on, for example, eBay. It's basically the same as the paper H & C sells. If you happen to be a chemist, you can make your own: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Flash-Paper

Disclaimer: I have not tried making flash paper myself, and wouldn't recommend anyone unfamiliar with chemistry to try it at home.
